INTRODUCTION:
This module contains information and suggested learning activities on Welding fillet on carbon
steel plates particularly in Flat position (1F). It includes instruction and procedure on how to weld fillet
on carbon steel plates (1F).
This module consists of one (1) learning outcome. This learning outcome contains learning
activities supported by instruction sheets. Read the information sheets. Before you perform the
instruction, answer the self-check and perform the activities provided. To ascertain your competence,
your teacher will assess/check if learning outcome.
you have acquired the knowledge necessary to perform the skill portion of the particular
Upon completing this module, report to your teacher for assessment to check your achievement
of knowledge and skills requirements of the learning competency. If you pass the assessment, you will
be given a certificate of completion.

DEFINITION OF TERNS:
As you wish to pursue SMAW as career, you should familiarize yourself with the common
terminologies in Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
• Arc-the flow of current from the tip of the electrode to the base metal being welded.
• Base metal- the metal to be welded or cut.
• Crater- a depression at the termination of a weld.
• Face of weld- the exposed surface of a weld made by an arc or gas welding process, on the
side from which welding was done.
• Pass- a single longitudinal progression of a welding operation along a joint or weld deposit.
• Porosity- gas pockets or voids in metal.
• Spatter- the metal particles given off during welding which do not form part of a weld
• Tack weld- a weld made to hold parts in proper alignment until the final welds are made.
• Puddle- that portion of a weld that is molten at the place the heat is supplied.
• Undercut- A groove melted into the base metal adjacent to the toe of the weld and left unfilled
by weld metal.
• Weaving- A technique of depositing weld metal in which the electrode is oscillated.
• Weld metal- That portion of a weld which has been melted during welding.
• Whipping- A term applied to an inward and upward movement of the electrode which is
employed in vertical welding to avoid undercut.
• Disposition rate- The amount of filler metal deposited in any welding process; rated in pounds
per hour.
• Pad- A series of overlapping stringer beads that completely cover the surface of a practice
plate increasing its thickness by each subsequent layer.
• Weld face- The exposed surface of a fusion weld.
• Root- The bottom surface of a weld on the opposite side from which welding was done.
• Penetration- The distance from the original surface of the base metal to that point at which
fusion increase.
• Fusion- The melting of metals until the molten portions unite with each other.
• Stringer bead- A weld bead made with very little rod manipulation.
• Root opening- The gap between the members to be joined at the root of the joint.
• Slag inclusion- Non-metallic porous material entrapped in weld metal or between the weld
metal and base metal.
• Arc blow- A concentration of magnetic force acting on the welding are causing it to deflect,
move, or “blow” from its normal path.
• Coupon- That portion of a weld which is removed from the rest plate to test for strength.

INFORMATION SHEET NO. 1.1

WELDING CARBON/MILD STEEL PLATES (1F)
Fillet Weld
The fillet weld is the most popular and commonly used weld in industry. It requires little or no
edge preparation. Single- fillet welds are fillet welds that have filler metal deposited on one side. They
are limited to smaller loads than double fillet welds. Double fillet welds are fillet welds that have filler
metal deposited on both sides to provide additional strength. It may be equal or unequal fillet. See
