Valid
A word that is used to describe something that is characterized
with objective truth, credibility, and is legally acceptable
grounded in facts and logic.

This means that something can only be proven as factual when

verified by evidence.

Valid Evidence
Valid evidence is any evidence that has the following qualities:

 Accuracy
 Relevance
 Specificity

A Step-by-step Guide in Analyzing and Evaluating the

Validity of Evidence

1. Argumentation
Identify the points/claim the author is trying to prove.
2. Specificity and Accuracy
Identify the specific facts, data, statistics, examples that
support the point. Moreover, to support the claim, the
evidence should be authentic (real), acceptable or reliable,
and truthful that represents the whole topic.
3. Relevance
Explain how the pieces of evidence are related to the claims.
In choosing the evidence for your claim, it should match the
argument. Its condition should be connected with the matter
at hand.
How do you evaluate its validity?
Analyze
1. Identify the point/claim the author is trying to prove.
2. Identify the evidence- specific facts, data, statistics,
examples, or other information that supports that point.
3. Identify the most important (the strongest evidence)
pieces of evidence for that point.

Evaluate
For each piece of evidence, ask the following questions:
Explanation Questions Yes No
The evidence should a. Is it relevant
be related/connected
to the claim at hand.
Whether or not the
author supports a
topic, the evidence
should match the
author’s point.
The evidence should b. Is it accurate?
come from a reliable
source. Research
studies, books,
newspaper, authority
or other government
agencies, and or
experts of a specific
field such as doctors,
teachers, and lawyers
are examples of a
reliable source.

Individual Practice
Read and understand the short selection below. Complete the
diagram that follows. Answer sheets are provided.

Maa National High School reported a high degree of low reading

comprehension among grade 9 students as a result of modular
learning brought about by the pandemic. The lack of exposure to the
English language, and teacher’s supervision in every learning
activity that requires students to read and comprehend are perceived
to be the prime causes. Consequently, 70 percent of the students who
are enrolled in the school’s Reading Enhancement Program are
grade 9 students while 30 percent are from the three remaining grade
levels. In addition, Ma'am Mary Buenavista, the English coordinator
at MNHS, revealed in an interview that students in grade 9 are
unable to apply their prior knowledge and experiences to the new
material, stating, quote, "Students no longer construct personal
meaning as they interact with written text." Thus, learning is
scarcely achieved in all subject areas where English is the language
of instruction.
