I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, the students shall be able to:
1. Extract claim and valid evidences from a local news article;
2. Participate in a group activity to enhance critical thinking and social skills; and
3. Judge the validity of the evidence identified from a selection through an evaluation
sheet

b) Motivation (7 minutes)
The teacher poses two different statements. Students are tasked
to select the one that they think is believable. Afterwards, the
teacher then uses the following questions as to prepare students
for the lesson and upcoming activities. Ultimately, this is to set
the tone of the class.
Processing Questions:
1. Between these two statements, which one do you agree with?
2. What made you agree with the statement you have chosen?
3. What mental skill you used in assessing the two statements
before you arrived at your decision?
c) Activity (10 minutes)
The class will be divided into 5 groups. Each is given a copy of the
article below from CNN Philippines.

correspondent, Kaithreen Cruz. Underline twice the claim.
Underline once all the evidences you could find and label each
one according to their specific type of evidence. Use the template
below the article as you answer this activity.

Valid
A word that is used to describe something that is characterized
with objective truth, credibility, and is legally acceptable
grounded in facts and logic.
Valid Evidence
Valid evidence is any evidence that has the following qualities:
Accuracy
Relevance
Specificity
1. Argumentation
Identify the points/claim the author is trying to prove.
2. Specificity and Accuracy
Identify the specific facts, data, statistics, examples that
support the point. Moreover, to support the claim, the
evidence should be authentic (real), acceptable or reliable,
and truthful that represents the whole topic.
3. Relevance
Explain how the pieces of evidence are related to the claims.
In choosing the evidence for your claim, it should match the
argument. Its condition should be connected with the matter
at hand.
How do you evaluate its validity?
Analyze
1. Identify the point/claim the author is trying to prove.
2. Identify the evidence- specific facts, data, statistics,
examples, or other information that supports that point.
3. Identify the most important (the strongest evidence)
pieces of evidence for that point.
Evaluate
For each piece of evidence, ask the following questions:
