SUBCLASS DICOTYLEDONAE

Any member of the flowering plants or angiosperms with cotyledons—a pair of leaves—in
the seed's embryo is referred to as a dicotyledon. Dicots have approximately 175,000 known
species. Dicots include the majority of common garden plants, broad-leaved flowering plants
like magnolias, roses, geraniums, and hollyhocks, as well as shrubs and trees.

Although there are some exceptions, dicots typically also possess flower parts (sepals, petals,
stamens, and pistils) arranged in a plan of four or five, or multiples thereof. The vessels that
carry water and food display a pattern resembling a mesh on the majority of the leaves, which
are net-veined.
