CLASS FILICINEAE

A group of plants that belong to the Pteropsida family and are similar to ferns in that they do
not produce seeds, have large, often complex leaves, sperms that must be carried by water,
and a well-developed generational cycle that typically consists of independent gametophytes
and sporophytes that frequently differ significantly in size and shape. This group includes the
living members of the orders Marattiales, Ophioglossales, and Filicales as well as the extinct
order Coenopteridales.
The sporangium is on the tips of the axis, has a massive, undifferentiated wall, and has a
central sterile columella. The plant body is an axis without roots.
