Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter establishes the viability of the study. It presents and discusses the

Research Design, Research Locale, Research Respondents, Sampling Procedure,

Data Gathering Procedure, Research Instrument, and Statistical Treatment.

Research Design

This study had utilized quantitative research design, particularly the descriptive

method in determining the level of awareness of local communities on global warming.

This method was appropriate for this study because it emphasizes objectives

measurement and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected

thru questionnaire, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using

computational techniques. The numerical data will then be a solid baseline for further

crafting of policies and implementation of programs which is helpful to the society.

Research Locale

The locale of the study was at Mabahin, Cortes, Surigao del Sur. Mabahin is

a barangay in the city of Cortes, in the province of Surigao del Sur. Its population as

determined by the 2020 Census was 3,013. This represented 16.81% of the total

population of Cortes. It is known in the province of Surigao del Sur for its rich source of

sea foods in the area. One can find different kinds of fish, crabs, etc. It has beaches

with white sands and water falls. People living in this area have fishing as the primary

source of living. In these contexts, this location is appropriate for gathering the

necessary data for this study. Similarly, from the study of Bridges et al., (2021) the
residence has the responsibility to be aware of the climate change because the place

they are living is very prone to the danger of this environmental crisis.

Research Respondents

The respondents of the study were the residents of Mabahin, Cortes, Surigao del

Sur. They were chosen at random using Cochran’s formula. Using this formula, the

researchers had distributed questionnaire to 246 residents. They have ensured that the

respondents are bonafied residents of Mabahin through the list taken from the barangay

office.

Sampling Design

The researchers employed the random probability sampling, specifically the

stratified random sampling which involves the sample being taken from a subset of the

population through Cochran’s Formula. The researchers computed for the samples for

each Purok for equal representation. After which, to determine specifically as to who will

be answering the survey, fishbowl method was used. This method used number

generator application in choosing the specific names of the prospect respondents. With

this, randomization can thoroughly be followed. And that bias was avoided.

Research Instrument

The researchers had utilized an adapted questionnaire to answer the problem of

the study. Since it is already standardized, there is no need to undergo validation. The

questionnaire was divided into three parts; part 1 was the demographic profile of the

respondents in which they are going to write their personal information such as name
(optional), age, sex, educational attainment and family monthly income; and part 2 is for

the level of awareness of the local communities towards global warming.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers had sent a permission letter to the Campus Director, along with

parental consent, to allow the study to be conducted off campus. Following approval,

the researchers requested permission from the Municipality Mayor and Barangay

Captain to conduct their research in Barangay Mabahin. Once permission was granted,

the researchers had personally administered the questionnaires and retrieved them on

the same day to ensure 100% retrieval. Following that, the collected data were

tabulated, interpreted, and analyzed.

Statistical Treatment

After the retrieval of the questionnaires, data were tallied and treated with the

following statistical treatments:

Frequency count, and percentage. These were used to present the profile of

the respondents.

Average weighted mean. This was used to describe the level of awareness on

climate change.

Chi-square. This was used to determine the relationship between the profile of

the respondents and their level of awareness on climate change.

Secondary Data. These data were used in interpreting the results of this

research’ survey. Having this utilized will help the researchers answer what they are

trying to investigate.
