Performance Task: Preserving Religious Heritage

The liturgical calendar follows the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It begins with
Advent, then to Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, Sacred Pascal Triduum, Easter, Pentecost,
Ordinary Time and finishing with the feast of the Christ the King.
Amongst the seasons in the Liturgical Calendar, Christmas is the season that has the most
significant impact on me. Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The name Christmas comes from the mass
of Christ. A mass service is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then comes
back to life. Christmas is one of those festivals that is celebrated by all whether they are
Christians or not. It is a time when family and friends come together and remember the good
things they have.
A memorable celebration or event that happened during Christmas was when my sister was in
school at Davao, we rarely get to see her. This one Christmas, despite the workloads from
school she went here in Tagbilaran and celebrated Christmas together. From a long time of us
being incomplete in Christmas, our family was able to finally be complete again. Furthermore,
as a tradition, we typically drink wine in Christmas, and at that moment the six glasses filled
with wine symbolized that all of our family members are here with us. In this event, my role
was helping my mother prepare the decorations for Christmas, I helped arrange the plates and
such.
Since I can remember, my family has had a traditional way of celebrating Christmas which gives
us our own identity as a family, and I would not change it for anything. We start our
celebrations eating our delicious dishes. According to our beliefs, the Christmas dinner is the
perfect moment to talk and share some stories of things that have happened during the year.
The impact of this event or celebration to me help me fully realize the importance of family in
one’s life. That even if one family member is incomplete, there is still something missing. The
true meaning of Christmas is love. God loved His own and provided a way – the only Way – for
us to spend eternity with Him. He gave His only Son to take our punishment for our sins. He
paid the price in full, and we are free from condemnation when we accept that free gift of love.
It is only right for us to celebrate Christmas with our loved ones.
