EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

“Lilies Options” is footwear hand-crafted business made out of Water Lilies or

Water Hyacinth. The business name comes from or conceptualized from the versatility

and usefulness of Eichhornia crassipes, the scientific name of water lily or commonly

known as Water Hyacinth. as the main material for hand crafting a footwear.

It’s been such a waste, even before, especially to places that has lakes, where

enormous amount of water lilies that are drifted off the shoreline by the wind or after a

storm, causing problems and difficulties not only to the fishermen, the neighborhood

near by the lake, but also causes harm on the marine animals especially fisheries. In

addition, the outbreak of water hyacinth and it’s decaying stage consumes a large

amount of dissolved oxygen in the water body at the same time, and the space for

reproduction of underwater animals such as fish will be reduced, and eventually, even

large numbers of fish will die, the decaying water hyacinth on the water causes a putrid,

a musty bad smell that causes dizziness and stomachache on the local residents, the same

reason why local government took action by disposing water hyacinth out of the water

and disposes it to the waste land which is seen as an opportunity by this business, seeing

a potential to the massive amount of water hyacinth being disposed as a material for

hand crafting footwear. Not only did it helped reduced the water hyacinth outbreak but

also helped the community for employment in making hand crafted footwear.

This paper and the business see a potential to the versatility and usefulness of the

said water hyacinth, a pest for other people, causing problems, but could be turned into

something good, a product, an output, a useful material. This paper will try to see the

viability if the said business will progress throughout.

Chapter 1

PRELIMENARY SECTIONS

This part of the paper and study presents the Introduction, Background of the Study,

Statement of the Problem, Framework of the Study and Definition of terms.

1.1 Introduction

Muntinlupa City, considering its geographical location is one of the cities covered of

lake, the Laguna Lake, and the so-called Jamboree Lake, which is a good place for water

lily outbreak. As Muntinlupa city experiences waterlily outbreak, the water lilies at the

shoreline near the neighborhood, during summertime where wilting of the plants are

inevitable, the waterlilies decomposes and causes bad smelling odor as it wilt and is still

on the water, it becomes a pest and an inconvenience as they causes harm to the fisheries

on the lake as well, the very reason why the locality created their ordinance of

eradicating waterlilies to the shore, now instead of eradicating the waterlilies

completely, it would have been better to transform these lilies into something useful and

that is the purpose and main objective of this paper, to see the marketability and viability

of the waterlily as the main material as a footwear. This job opportunity or business will

be a local job opportunity wherein the motherhood of the neighborhood would be the

employees as an aid and as a help as well.

1.2 Background of the Study

Water hyacinth, commonly identified as Eichhornia crassipes, is a destructive

invasive alien species. It is a native of the Amazon basin of South America but has

proliferated extensively globally, as seen in Figure 1. crassipes constitutes a threat to

biodiversity, ecosystem functionality, human health, and socio-economic growth as well

as poor people’s livelihoods and income generation.

This prompted Asian countries to make commitments to numerous international

environmental treaties and, consequently, set up their national action plans concerning

the severity of the infestations to their local environments. (Obianuju P. Ilo, 2020)

The three most common techniques which are used for the control include chemical,

mechanical, and biological. Chemical control is moderately cheap but can hardly be

used as a long-term solution considering its adverse effect on the environment.

Mechanical control, on the other hand, requires the use of machinery and has been

observed to retrieve significant amounts of biomass. Despite its potential, it is assumed

to suffer from experimental proof.

This paper is a long-term solution to help decrease the invasive growth of water

hyacinth or waterlilies on the bodies of water as it is critical to let it loose by means of

making and crafting it as a useful product plus it gives a job opportunity to the locality.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), native to Southern Asian countries, but now

an environmental and social menace throughout the global tropics, affects the

environment and humans in diverse ways. Most of these are detrimental, although some

are beneficial or potentially useful. Many of these effects are due to its potential to grow

rapidly and produce enormous amounts of biomass, thereby covering extensive areas of

naturally open water. A most striking and little understood effect of water hyacinth is on

aquatic plant community structure and succession. Water hyacinth replaces existing

aquatic plants, and develops floating mats of interlocked water hyacinth plants, which

are colonized by several semi-aquatic plant species. As succession continues, floating

mats dominated by large grasses may drift away or be grounded. This process can lead

to rapid and profound changes in wetland ecology, e.g. shallow areas of water will be

converted to swamps. In slow-moving water bodies, water hyacinth mats physically

slow the flow of water, causing suspended particles to be precipitated, leading to silting.

The reduced water flow can also cause flooding and adversely affect irrigation schemes.

Water hyacinth acts as a weed in paddy rice by interfering with germination and

establishment. Water hyacinth is reported to cause substantially increased loss of water

by evapo-transpiration compared to open water, although this has recently been

challenged. Displacement of water-by-water hyacinth can mean that the effective

capacity of water reservoirs is reduced by up to 400 m³ of water per hectare, causing

water levels in reservoirs to fall more rapidly in dry periods. Water displacement,

siltation of reservoirs and physical fouling of water intakes can have a major impact on

hydroelectric schemes. Water hyacinth mats are difficult or impossible to penetrate with

boats, and even small mats regularly foul boat propellers. This can have a severe effect

on transport, especially where water transport is the norm. Infestations make access to

fishing grounds increasingly time consuming or impossible, while physical interference

with nets makes fishing more difficult or impractical. Some fishing communities in West

Africa have been abandoned as a direct result of the arrival of water hyacinth.

Water hyacinth has direct effects upon water chemistry. It can absorb large amounts

of nitrogen and phosphorus, other nutrients and elements. It is this ability to pick up

heavy metals which has led to the suggestion that water hyacinth could be used to help

clean industrial effluent in water. By absorbing and using nutrients, water hyacinth

deprives phytoplankton of them. This leads to reduced phytoplankton, zooplankton and

fish stocks. Conversely, as the large amounts of organic material produced from

senescent water hyacinth decompose, this leads to oxygen deficiency and anaerobic

conditions under the floating water hyacinth mats. These anaerobic conditions have been

the direct cause of fish death, and changes in the fish community by eliminating most

species at the expense of air breathing species. Stationary mats of water hyacinth also

shade out bottom growing vegetation, thereby depriving some species of fish, of food

and spawning grounds. The potential impact on fish diversity is enormous. The

conditions created by water hyacinth encourage the vectors of several human diseases,

including the intermediate snail hosts of bilharzia (schistosomiasis) and most mosquito

vectors, including those responsible for the transmission of malaria, encephalitis and

filariasis. (Obianuju P. Ilo, 2020)

 Water Hyacinth/Waterlilies: Nymphaeaceae is a family of flowering plants,

commonly called water lilies. They live as rhizomatous aquatic herbs in

temperate and tropical climates around the world.

 Handcrafted Footwear: The word “Handmade” implies that something has

been made by hand. Completely. Entirely. This is a shoe (or item for that

matter) that is 100% made by hand without any use of machinery.

 Viability: The property of being viable; the ability to live or to succeed.

Viability is defined as whether something is capable of growing, or

something practical and able to be done.

 Marketability: Essentially, marketability is a measure of whether a product

will appeal to buyers and sell at a certain price range to generate a profit.

 Pungent Odor: Something that is pungent has a strong, sharp smell or taste

which is often so strong that it is unpleasant.

 Infestation: the presence of an unusually large number of insects or animals

in a place, typically so as to cause damage or disease.

Water Hyacinth/Water lilies Study

The results of this thesis show that the invasive water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes),

which is now widely distributed at Muntinlupa City Lake, can be used by the local population

even under the very basic conditions of the study area.

This study tries to find ways to help lessening the amount of this plant in terms

of making a product, out of it aside from the products which has been a major success to

different researchers and making one out of it is certainly great and that is focusing in

the qualities of hand craft foot ware produced from this plant.

7.1. The difficulties and possibilities for water hyacinth

The greatest advantage for using water hyacinth is its high abundance as free

natural resource. This implies that the abundance of water hyacinth is largely sufficient

to supply raw material for the local population in a long term. Another advantage is the

proximity of the plant to villages and agricultural fields. As such, water hyacinth can be

harvested and processed directly next to the lakeshore thus reducing labor intensity.

However, the high water content of water hyacinth (app. 90%) (Elserafy 1980) makes

the collection and transportation laborious and thus is one of the most important barriers

to its use.

7.2. Implementation of water hyacinth handicrafts

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
UNIVERSITY RD. POBLACION MUNTINLUPA CITY
ENTREP 2 Entrepreneurial Management
AB Mass Communication 3G

Implementing the use of water hyacinth as raw material for handicrafts foot ware

might be more challenging compared to water hyacinth compost. The oversaturation of

handicraft markets in the region coupled with the low purchasing power of local

customers requires selling water hyacinth handicrafts outside of the region. For

promoting the use of water hyacinth as a source of compost, three main challenges must

be addressed: transportation production and costs, relatively long production time and

the local skepticism toward local innovations. Due to the insufficient crop production for

supporting households and the general lack of protein sources in the Muntinlupa City,

farmers attempt to fill the gap by increasing fishing efforts.

In the long term, when water hyacinth handicrafts foot ware are established on

the national level, targeting international markets could represent the next step. Export

marketing for handicrafts is more complex because it requires more effort in

communication, preparation and planning: high production capacity, strict quality

control, up to date design, commercial documents, precise labeling and packaging

instructions, prompt delivery and specific method of payment.

7.3. Conclusion of Water Hyacinth/Water lilies Study

From this research, it was deduced that it is possible to valorise water hyacinth,

an invasive aquatic plant species.

This will help to increase farmers’ willingness and readiness to further use water

hyacinth compost and thus promoting the diffusion effect in the society. Further,
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA

marketing success of water hyacinth handicraft will improve empowerment of women

associations in the society at Muntinlupa City Lake. In the long-term perspective, the

experience gained could be transferred to other places and other developing countries

facing similar challenges with water hyacinth.
