Lesson 2 - Gender
In Spanish we have articles the same as in English. The main difference with
English, is that in Spanish you have to fit the article in gender and in number.
Non-specific Specific
1) de + el = del
Atención
2) a + el = al
Genders
The words in Spanish can have 1 of 2 genders. They are: Masculine and Feminine.
Masculine
These are the most common rules, but of course, there will be many exceptions.
el libro el café
el trabajo el viaje
Exceptions:
La mano
la radio
la foto
2.- Words that have endings with - ma -pa -ta
Exceptions:
La carta
la pata
la crema
la cama
la capa
Exceptions
la imagen
la piel
la cárcel
la mujer
Feminine
1.- Most female words have an ending with -a
la casa
la comida
Exceptions:
el dia
2.- Words that have endings with - ad -ión
la ciudad la información
la facultad la canción
Exceptions
el camión
el avión
Professions
Some professions can change to masculine and feminine, while others will
remain the same for both genders.
1.- I n case the profession remains the same for both genders, you just change the
correct gender of the article
el estudiante la pianista
el artista la artista
2.- I n case the profession changes you replace or add an - a at the end
el doctor la doctora
el ingeniero la ingeniera
el director la directora
