ABSTRACTS

In its present form, this statement is the step of searching in the online library database.
There are many online databases that are accessible via the PTAR portal. However, we
have only selected two databases and we will show every step of searching the
database. Emerald Insight and ProQuest: Education Collection and ERIC Plus are
the online databases we picked as the subject to this assignment and we have
explained more about both databases in this assignment.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

In performing this assignment, my group and I take guideline from respected person who
deserve our greatest gratitude. The completion of this assignment gives us much
pleasure. We would like to show gratitude to Madam KasmarinI binti Baharuddin, IMC
406 – Library Skills course Lecturer, University Technology Mara (UiTM) for giving us a
good guideline for this assignment throughout numerous consultations. We would also
like to expand my gratitude to all those who have directly and indirectly guide we in writing
this assignment.

OBJECTIVE

Objective of this assignment is prepared to enhance and to understand of level the Online
Database. It is about learn the correct step in the quest notice something in the database.
In this assignment, it is important to highlight how to search the article and how to put the
articles together as proof. For this assignment, we have chosen two different online
database which is Emerald Sight and ProQuest: Education Collection and ERIC Plus. At
the end of this assignment we would like to choose ProQuest: Education Collection and
ERIC Plus to search an information.

SEARCHING METHOD

To start the research, we need to find out the searching method first. This searching
method will be used in both of online databases chosen. For any online database, there
are two components: the data collection and the data access interface. Different
commercial suppliers render available data sets and create an interface or search engine
to access the information. Using the same interface, some vendors supply several
different data sets, while some interfaces are exclusive to a specific data set. Some
functionalities listed below are shared by the Advanced Search Space of these various
interfaces.

i) Boolean searching
ii) Wildcard searching
iii) Truncation searching

INTRODUCTION OF BOOLEAN SEARCHING

Boolean searching is based on a system of symbolic logic generated by George Boole,

an English mathematician from the 19th century. Using the words AND, OR, NOT (known
as Boolean operators) to restrict, expand, or describe the search, Boolean searches allow
someone to combine words and phrases. How to do a Boolean Search should be
understood by a good researcher.
Example of Boolean Search Terms:

1. “AND” Logic
Boolean “AND” tells a search engine that you want to find information about two or more
words of the search. Cats and dogs, for starters. This will narrow down the search results
because only results that contain all search words will be returned from the search engine.
In general, the “AND” operator is used to combine various kinds of definitions, different
elements of the problem.
AND

Poverty and crime

Using AND narrows a search by combining terms.
By using AND someone can find reading material
that include information about both poverty and crime.
Example: “Poverty” AND “Crime”

4
IMC406: LIBRARY SKILLS - ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal)

2. “OR” Logic
The search engine is told by the Boolean Operator “OR” that you want to find details
about any search term you entered. College or University, for instance. This will extend
the search results because any results that have either search word in them will be
brought back by the search engine. The “OR” operator is usually used to equate identical,
equal, or synonymous concepts.
OR

College OR University
By using or someone can find resources that include information
about college, university, and resources that discuss both
Example: College “OR” University

3. “NOT” Logic
The search engine does NOT tell the Boolean operator that you want to find information
about the first search term, but nothing about the second search term. Cats are not dogs,
for instance. This limits the results of your analysis since the search engine only returns
resources for the first search term (cats) but removes any resources that include the
second search term (dogs).
NOT
Cats “NOT” Dogs
Using “NOT”, someone can find resources that only discuss
Cats
Example: Cats “NOT” Dogs

INTRODUCTION OF WILDCARD SEARCHING

Wildcards in a search word take the role of one or more characters. A question mark (?)
is used when searching for single characters. For multiple character quest, an asterisk (*)
is used. To look for alternative spellings and variations on a root word, wildcards are used.
Wildcard characters cannot be used in place of a word's first letter or in an exact quest
for words and word roots must include at least three letters preceding a wildcard.

Wildcard Basics

1. Percent (%) in a wildcard

The percent symbol is used in SQL to match zero or more times with any character
(including an underscore).
2. Asterisk (*) in a wildcard
The asterisk in a wildcard matches any character zero or more times. For example,
"comp*" matches anything beginning with "comp" which means "comp," "complete," and
"computer" are all matched.
3. Question mark (?) in a wildcard
A question mark is balanced once by a single character. For instance, "c?mp" matches
"camp" and "comp." It is also possible to use the question mark more than once. For
instance, "c??p" will match both the examples above and "coop." The question mark can
also match any trailing question mark zero or one time in MS-DOS and the Windows
command line. For instance, "co??" would match all the matches above but since they
are trailing question marks, "cop" would match "even though it's not four characters."
4. Open and close brackets ([]) in a wildcard
The open and close bracket wildcards fit a single character in a set, with Unix shells,
Windows PowerShell, and programming languages that support regular expressions. For
example, [a-z] matches any character "a through "z," meaning that anything not in that
range will not be matched, such as a number.

IMC406: LIBRARY SKILLS - ONLINE DATABASE (PTAR Portal)

INTRODUCTION OF TRUNCATION SEARCHING

Truncation is also known as looking for wildcards. It allows a word and alternative
spellings of that term to be searched for.
To truncate a search term, do a keyword search in a database, but remove the ending
of the word and add an asterisk (*) to the end of the word. The database will retrieve
results that include every word that begins with the letters you entered.

For example, if you type in the keyword, interact* the database will search for interact,
interacting, interaction, and interactivity.

INTRODUCTION OF ONLINE DATABASE

An online database is a database accessible from a local network or the internet.

Websites host online databases, which are made available as software as a service
product accessible through a web browser. They could be free or require payment such
as via a monthly subscription. Some also improved functionality, such as collaborative
editing and notification of emails.

This is also an electronic resource that contains information such as article reviews,
academic articles, journals, conference papers, proceedings, case files, and others
online. Depending on the type of library subscription, this material is accessible in the
form of either full text or abstracts.

The front page of the PERPUSTAKAAN TUN ABDUL RAZAK UITM Library is also known
as the PTAR Library, as we can see below. We can access the website via this link

which will help us make decisions on whether we should get the full or the complete or
not. We use the PTAR Library on the www.uitm.edu.my website to pick two online
databases which is:-

INTRODUCTION OF EMERALD INSIGHT

A distributed, object-oriented database system that integrates seamlessly with the

Emerald system is the Emerald database. It has an associative query language that can
exploit indexes on function paths (index-in method) (encapsulating objects) and prevents
impedance mismatching with the language of the application.

Significant effort has been put into producing a seamless integration of the database
system into the exiting Emerald language: database operations are legal wherever
Emerald statements are legal, You can use all Emerald objects in queries, set-
expressions in queries are first-class objects, and the heavy typing of the Emerald type
framework also includes the query language (i.e.. application programs and their queries
are type-checked at compile-time), the scoping rules of Emerald are extended to also
cover the query language. You may have queries (and other database operations) inside
object literals in query expressions. There are two ways to use the Emerald Online
Database: Simple Search is first and Advance Search is second.

a) Basic Search
Step to get the information through Basic Search. Below attach is front page for Basic

INTRODUCTION OF PROQUEST (EDUCATION COLLECTION)

Education Database are combination with the full-text and Education Collection gives
access to ERIC while the main index for educational research. They together provide
abstracts, indexing and full-text coverage of journal articles, books, book chapters,
dissertations, working papers, and more. It is including full-text from hundreds of leading
educational journals. ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) is the most used
index of literature related to education in the world. Established in 1966, the U.S. supports
ERIC. Institute of Education Sciences of the Department of Education'. ERIC is the world's
largest education database, with more than 1.8 million journal articles, research studies,
conference papers, dissertations, and books registered. Via the latest ProQuest platform,
several libraries that subscribe to the Education Database now have access to the ERIC
database. This access implies that searchers can scan all databases simultaneously for
additional focus on educational studies. Therefore, to this already impressive database,
the Education Collection adds importance. This collection includes the complete text of
the ProQuest Education Database, including more than 1,000 full text journals and 18,000

BEST ONLINE DATABASE TO FIND FULL TEXT ARTICLES

Based on the online database that we had been using to find the articles, we decided in
this assignment to choose ProQuest as the best online database. The reason why we
choose it because ProQuest is easier to be used, particularly for students who want, seek
articles that suited for their learning process.

We used advance search to find the full text articles.

Interactive and user-

friendly interface.

Advance search and basic

search are easy see on the

CONCLUSION
Finally, we had done our research about online database and successfully finished the
assignment 1. We have chosen ProQuest Education Collection and ERIC Plus and
Emerald Insight as the online database. We can conclude that the online database
ProQuest Education Collection and ERIC Plus is more convenient compared to Emerald
Insight. This is because by using the ProQuest Education Collection and ERIC Plus, the
article can be specified by source type, document type and language. This online
database will be easier for us to get the exact article that we want.

In addition, ProQuest Education Collection and ERIC Plus also have more articles found
compared to Emerald Insight. User can choose which one meets their needs. This proves
that ProQuest Education Collection and ERIC Plus is more convenient, easy, and friendly
