Laboratory protocol IV
“Evaluation of corneal parameters”

Student’s name, surname:

Date:

Part 1
Task:
1. To evaluate your colleague’s corneal base curve in principal meridians.

Procedure:
1. To listen instructions from lecturer about the keratometry.

2. Check if patient is seated comfortably, when his/hers head is pushed to chin and forehead rest.
Adjust instrument height if necessary

3. Adjust focus to see target line clearly.

4. Center mires on the cornea of right eye.

5. Move keratometer closer to the cornea to see mires clearly.

6. Aligh the mires.

7. Evaluate if lines in the middle is also aligned. If it is not the case, find correct orientation of first
principal meridian. If necessary, realign mires.

8. Evaluate corneal curvature in the first principal meridian (orientation of meridian – the direction
of alignment).

9. Record the result: _______________ @ _________________

10. Turn mires by 90 degrees.

11. Align mires and evaluate curvature in second principal meridian .

12. Record the result: _______________ @ _________________

13. Indicate the results on cross figure:

14. Answer the questions:

 Do patient has astigmatism? _______________________________________

 If yes - what type of astigmatism: with-the rule against-the-rule oblique

 Please draw an approximate corneal topography for this case (use only red and green
color):

Part 2
Fulfill the tasks!

1. Patient’s keratometry: 7.45 @ 180 / 7.60 @ 90 . Mark keratometry results on the cross figure!

2. What is the difference of base curves (millimeters) between both principal meridians?

_________________________________________

3. What astigmatic power corresponds to that difference? _____________________________

4. Patient was fitted with this toric contact lens: -2.25 -1.25 x 180
Contac lens on the eye (via biomicroscope) look like this:

How many degrees and to which side the rotation took place?

What changes to the prescription need to be made to provide rotation compensation?

5. Patient was fitted with this toric contact lens: -5.00 -0.75 x 20

6. Patient has toric contact lens in the right eye: +1.00 -1.75 x 160. Contact lens has rotated to the
right side for 20 degrees. Please indicate where would be laser scribe mark of toric lens in this case:
