John Redmond was first elected to the house of

commons in 1881, as MP for Waterford. He suffered


because he supported Parnell. By 1892, Redmond was
the leader of a group with only 9 Parnellite MP’s.
Redmond’s cooperaFon with the ConservaFves was
condemned by many NaFonalists, but it produced
results. This led to the development of the Department
of agriculture, and they introduced the local
government act (1898). In 1900, John Redmond was
elected leader of the Irish Parliamentary party. In 1911
the parliament act diluted the power of the house of
lords to veto new laws passed by the house of
commons. The third home-rule was introduced on the
11th of April 1912. However, Redmond’s ambiFon was
about to hit and immovable object. Ulster solemn
league and covenant. World War I cause problems for
the home-rule bill and when Redmond died in 1918, he
didn’t get to see Ireland as a free country.
