LESSON 1: Solving Problem Involving System Of

Linear Inequalities In Two Variables

At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Solves word problems involving systems of linear inequalities in two
variables. (M8AL-IIb-2)

In all lessons, You are given the opportunity to use your prior knowledge
and skills in solving system of linear inequalities graphically. You are also
given varied activities to process the knowledge and skills learned and deepen
and transfer their understanding of the different lessons.

Activity # 1

Description: This activity will enable you to remember how to solve system
linear inequalities in two variables.

Directions: Solve each of the following systems of linear inequalities

graphically.
Have you ever asked yourself how businessmen make profits? How can
farmers increase their yield or harvest? How parents budget their income on
food, education, clothing and other needs? How cellular phone users choose
the best payment plan? How students spend their daily allowances or travel
from home to school?

Find out the answers to these questions and to determine the vast
applications of systems of linear inequalities in two variables and solving
problem involving system of linear inequalities through this module.

Activity # 2

Description: In this activity you will able to use linear inequalities in two
variables to represent a real-life situation and to find some possible
solutions of a linear inequality in two variables and draw its graph?

Directions: Use the situation below to answer the questions that follow.

Nimfa lives near a beach resort. During summer vacation, she sells
souvenir items such as bracelets and necklaces made of local shells. Each
bracelet costs Php 85 while each piece of necklace costs Php 115. She needs
to sell at least Php 15,000 worth of bracelets and necklaces.
2. How much would Nimfa’s total sale be if she sells 5 bracelets and 5 necklaces?
What about if she sells 10 bracelets and 20 necklaces?

3. What mathematical statement would represent the total sale of bracelets and
necklaces? Describe the mathematical statement, then graph it for the particular
case when Nimfa makes a total sale of Php 15,000.

4. Nimfa wants to have a total sale of at least Php 15,000. What mathematical
statement would represent this? Describe the mathematical statement. then graph.

5. How many bracelets and necklaces should Nimfa sell to have a total sale of at least
Php15,000? Give as many answers as possible then justify.

Solving Problem Involving System of Linear Inequalities in two Variables

Many students find that real world problems are more difficult. In solving problem
involving system of linear inequalities, there are more steps to find the solution.

1. Read the question properly

2. Check the inequalities given in the question.
3. According to the inequality make an inequations.
4. Change the given equation in slope intercept form, then,
5. Follow the step in solving system of linear inequalities in two variables graphically.

Solving System Linear Inequalities word problems

1. Fuel from petrol pump A costs Php 30 per liter and from petrol pump B costs Php
50 per liter. Mr. Suave has at most Php 200 to spend on fuel.
Write and graph a system of linear inequalities.

Solution:
Let x = fuel from petrol pump A
y = fuel from petrol pump B

Mr. Suave have at most Php 200 to spend on fuel therefore the inequality form:

30x + 50 y ≤ 200

When you buy fuel negative numbers are not included:

x≥0
y≥0
As both x and y are greater than zero so zero is included.
So, you can formulate a system:

The graph of the 3 inequalities

30x + 50 y ≤ 200
3 liters of fuel from pump A and 2 liters from pump B
2 liters of fuel from pump A and 2 liters from pump B

Summary
This lesson was about solving problem involving system of linear inequalities in
two variables. In this lesson, you were able to use the graphical method of finding
the solutions of the system of linear inequalities and you were also given the
chance to formulate ideas on how to solve real-life problems, make decisions
based on the problems, and demonstrate your understanding of the lesson by
doing some practical task.
