ASSIGNMENT SECTION )

1. Investigate on the use of organic polymer materials in making batteries. You may use
journal articles and news features. Describe the concept of redox systems in such type of
batteries.

According to Yan et al. (2017), organic polymer materials are classic redox-active
compounds that are extensively used as electrodes in rechargeable batteries. When it
comes to usage, rechargeable batteries are quite effective because they may be used again
after charging them for a period of time. Furthermore, to explain the idea of redox systems in
such types of batteries, it uses the same metal ions on both sides. If metal ions pass
through the membrane, it will not result in any crossover contamination of the electrolyte. It
means that redox flow batteries that has different metal ions, which can be seen in an iron‐
chromium flow battery. Cross-contamination brought on by an ion's penetration could result
in irreversible performance loss. It means that, unlike rechargeable or reusable batteries,
they cannot be used again. Batteries that have irreversible performance loss must be thrown
away since, after using all the energy they contain, they are no longer useful. Moreover,
classic redox flow batteries have two divided electrolyte reservoirs: catholyte and anolyte.
These two concepts are separated by a membrane, which allows ions to travel through it
(Yan et al., 2017).

2. Assess the risks of corrosion and how are these mitigated in the industry.

Corrosion has direct and indirect impacts on our everyday lives. Its main risks and
effects are worker injury, a reduction in the availability of industrial equipment, a decrease in
the overall value of a building when the appearance is compromised, pipe obstructions,
mechanical damage to pumps, the release of gases or liquids, and the contamination of
fluids in pipelines or vessels, which can harm the environment or put people in danger.
In the electronics industry, the main reason for failure in various electronic devices is the
corrosion of one or more of the metallic components of an electronic component. In order to
mitigate corrosion in the electronics industry, environments that could affect its performance
should be avoided, such as tropical, subtropical, and contaminated desserts, because they
have high rates of failure.
On the other hand, in the automotive industry, the primary cause of car body corrosion is
the accumulation of dust in different closed parts. To reduce corrosion in the automotive
industry, always clean vehicles so that dust does not accumulate in closed areas of the car.
If dust is left there for a long time without being removed, it will either accumulate or absorb
moisture, which will destroy the parts of a vehicle.
Lastly, in thermoelectric plants, corrosion in steam plant equipment can occur on both
the waterside and the steam side of the boiler, with the fire temperature reaching up to 700 °
C, depending on the type, size, and capacity of the boiler. In order to mitigate corrosion in
the thermoelectric plants, it should be placed away from surfaces that generate steam and
water to avoid damage like the corrosion or destruction that occurs in metal.
