GREETINGS! Peace and joy to you and your family. We hope you’re staying healthy and safe.
The Japan Karate Association of Luzon (JKA Luzon) in collaboration with JKA Olongapo is honored
to present the exciting TRADITIONAL KARATE OPEN 2023 – SUBIC to be held this
9th JULY 2023, SUNDAY at the SUBIC BAY GYMNASIUM, Subic Bay Freeport, Olongapo City.
This is a special event to publicly showcase the quality of traditional Karate skills possible through
diligent, consistent work. This tournament offers highly-trained officiating and an excellent
opportunity for all Karate practitioners to experience the thrill of high-level competition. As is
customary, the rules of etiquette and control will be strictly enforced. We know you will enjoy
the camaraderie, friendly competition, and wholesome atmosphere of this event.
We have invited select organizations nationwide as well as delegations from the US, Australia,
Taiwan, and UAE. We would be honored if you and your organization joined us at this event to
foster good will and cooperation among traditional Karatekas worldwide.
Enclosed here are necessary information and forms. Please feel free to make extra copies as

All tournament registration forms and fees must be received by: Sunday, June 18, 2023. Any
individual or team registering after this date will be charged a PhP 500 late fee.
X TOURNAMENT RULES
ALLOWED KATA
A) Brown/Black Belt (3 kyu & up) - All Advanced Shotokan katas. Sansai & Hyakuhachiho Shotokan
versions are accepted.
• Kata will be judged on the following criteria : focus, stances, complete techniques, rhythm,
intensity, kiai & correct basics.
• If kata is not completed, no 2nd chance attempt and will receive a 0. If kiai, move or moves are
left out, judges will make appropriate deductions.
• Scoring range are as follows: (9-7 kyu) white/yellow/orange 5.0-6.0, (6-4 kyu) green/blue/purple
6.0-7.0, (3 kyu & up) brown/black 7.0-8.0. As much of the range can be used to give competitors
fair scores.
• White to Purple belts are not allowed to perform kata higher than required for their next
promotion examination.
• All divisions will be point system with 3 or 5 judges. Eliminate highest & lowest scores. In case of
a tie, contestants must perform another kata; white belts can repeat the same kata.
• Divisions with 10 or more competitors will have an elimination round (Taikyoku 1, Heians &
Tekki 1), flag system.
Elimination Katas
• Brown/Black Belt (3 kyu & up) - Heian 2, 3, 4, 5 & Tekki 1
• Green/Blue/Purple Belt (6-4 kyu) - Heian 1, 2, 3, & 4
• White/Yellow/Orange Belt (9-7 kyu) - Taikyoku 1 & Heian 1
KUMITE (Shobu Ippon Rules)
• Ippon Shobu Kumite (1 full point or 2 half point), 2 minutes (Running time for Children and
Juniors / Stop time for Adults). To receive a wazari the technique must have good focus, control,
extension & intent. Lower belts will be allowed some leniency. Adult male and female advanced
belt finals, ages 18- Up years old, Nihon Shobu kumite (2 full point or 4 half point), 3 minute
match (Stop time).
• Two complete consecutive techniques that score can be an ippon if they are completed before
yame, are in quick succession, and have excellent focus, distance, and timing.
• An ippon may be awarded in the event of an exceptionally well-executed technique. This
includes scoring techniques that receive no reaction from the opponent. An ippon is rarely
awarded, as the technique must be nearly perfect.
• Competitors can target the body, back, face & head. Only light skin touch on the face is allowed
for the children and juniors. Adults may make only light contact to the body, back, face & head,
if any at all.
• A competitor may be immediately penalized or disqualified if the contact is intentional or
malicious.
• If a competitor shows signs of injury, the judges must determine if there was a contact foul or
the person was unprepared. Then a penalty can be given.
• If the time expires before the ippon is scored – decision is called for by judges.
• 1st Tie: Sudden death (First score), 1 minute (Running time).
• 2nd Tie: Judges must select a winner based on aggressiveness, skill & attitude.
XI PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
• Children division 6-11 years old must wear complete gears, White approved gloves, Mouth
Guard, Chest protector (optional), Groin protector (optional) for males.
• Division ages 12 years old and up must wear Mouth guard, White approved gloves & Groin
protector for males (Chest protector optional).

Tournament staff will group competitors into appropriate divisions. You will be notified what divisions you are in at
Tournament Day Check-in. Check-in time: 8:00-9:00 am.

and release any and all claims, causes of action, loses, damages, cost expenses including but not limited to injuries,
attorney fees, either known or unknown, now existing or arise in the future that may have of whatever kind or
nature against any Tournament organizer, officials, or anyone else involved in any way with the Tournament. We
hereby acknowledge that the Tournament organizers for publicity, sales, or promotions can use any individual,
team, or any other pictures or videos taken of us in this Tournament without compensation to any individual Team
member or the Team as a whole.
