Standard procedures for backfilling and excavation for medium voltage cables

11KV are as follows:

1. Excavation: The first step is to excavate the trench to the depth not less than
1MTR and the trench should be wide enough to accommodate the cables.

2. Before starting the backfilling process, ensure that the trench is clean and free
from any debris or sharp objects that may damage the cable.

3. Ensure that the trench bottom is level and free from sharp objects that could
damage the cable.

4. Bedding: After excavation, a bedding layer of sand or fine gravel 100mm

thickness should be laid at the bottom of the trench to provide support and protect
the cable from any sharp objects.

5. Place the medium voltage cable in position, ensuring that it is properly aligned
and supported throughout its length.

6. Covering: Once the cable is in place, it should be covered with a layer of sand or
fine gravel 100mm thickness to protect it from damage during backfilling.

7. Place concrete slabs on either side of the cable to protect it from any external
damage during backfilling.
8. Ensure that there is enough space between the slabs and the cable to allow for any
movement or expansion of the cable.

9. Backfilling: The trench should then be backfilled with suitable material such as
sand or soil, in layers not exceeding 150mm thickness, and each layer should be
compacted using suitable equipment.

10. Ensure that proper warning tapes are installed above the cable before final
backfilling to indicate its presence.

11. Test the cable for continuity and insulation resistance before commissioning it.

12. Finally, restore any disturbed surfaces to their original condition after completion
of work.
