Expectations, rights and responsibilities


It is important that trainees are aware of the behaviours expected in the workplace, and of
their rights and responsibilities, so they can be confident in exercising them.

Expectations
Trainees are expected to:
• commit to industry-based learning
• cooperate and accept duties in an obliging manner
• work with the workplace supervisor to design a workplace learning program that includes
experiences and activities that develop the core skills for work
• be eager to learn, listen to instructions and ask questions
• be respectful, polite, courteous and honest
• meet standards of hygiene, decency and cleanliness
• comply with specified uniform and/or standard of dress expected at the host workplace.

Rights
Trainees are entitled to:
• a workplace that is safe and free of bullying, discrimination, harassment or intimidation
• a meal breaks at a time to be negotiated with the workplace supervisor.

Responsibilities
Trainees are responsible for:
• contacting the workplace HSE supervisor and, if requested, attending an interview
before starting the work placement
• contacting the workplace HSE supervisor if unable to attend the workplace on any given
occasion
• taking the Workplace Logbook to the workplace and completing the written components
each day of work placement
• following workplace rules and protocols, including use of mobile telephones and
personal digital devices, use of company computers for personal use, or to access non-
work-related web sites.
• maintaining their own safety and carrying out work duties in a safe manner
• observing specific company safety policies and procedures and standards in the
workplace, including reporting any workplace injuries/incidents and hazards/dangers
• ensuring information regarding the business, and all people with whom trainees may
have dealings, are kept confidential (trainees may be asked to sign a confidentiality
agreement).
• maintaining high standards of conduct, and as a minimum, abiding by government laws.

Workplace Learning Logbook


The Workplace Learning Logbook is a valuable document as it provides an accurate record
of the number of hours worked, a detailed account of workplace activities and experiences
and a comprehensive evaluation of workplace performance. Trainees are responsible for
ensuring the logbook:
• is kept up to date, in good condition and is not lost
• if lost, is reported to the Workplace Learning Coordinator promptly
• is accurately and carefully completed
• is readily available to the workplace HSE supervisor and assessor.
• is signed by the workplace HSE supervisor after each unit completed in the workplace.

Work Activity carried out


Summary of work performed today
1. Identify and assess risks to the environment in workplace
Criteria Covered 1. Identify any current working practices in your organisation which could
cause harm to the environment
2. Identify environmental hazards in the workplace
3. Identify risks to the environment arising from the workplace such as:
a) Understand the nature of the environment in which you are working in
b) Identify the environmental aspects of your organisations activity. Aspects
can
include working practices, tasks, use of machinery, plant or equipment, use of
substances, minimising waste, recycling and/or disposal procedures or other
activities specific to own organisation. Products could be solids, liquids or
gases
c) Identify the environmental impacts associated with each individual aspect.
Identification of impacts could be by examination, use, reference to suppliers
instructions, own organisation’s procedures, specialist knowledge, own
investigations
d) Assess the level of risk of each impact against legal requirements and Best
Available Technology Not Entailing Excessive Cost (BATNEEC)
e) Reports shall be documented. Use of a documented information system
(such as
ISO 9001:2015)
4. Identify any materials, products or equipment used in any part of your
organisation which could cause harm to the environment
5. Ensure availability of data related to the materials available at work place,
such as MSDS

Trainees Activity Collect evidence to show that you understand the Hazards and Risks to the
Environment in the Workplace. The evidence could include
a. Work activity record in the log book
b. Personal Statement
c. Photographic/Video to support your findings
d. Report to your supervisor (If applicable)
e. Company HSE forms Environmental Audit Records, Observation records,
MSDS, Emission Reports(if applicable)
Company 1. Please provide suitable location for the trainees to carry out the identification
Involvement of environmental related issues likely to occur. (E.g. Waste Management yard,
Scrap Yards, Painting Workshop, Storage warehouse, etc.)
2. Please provide the forms relevant to the tasks if the company is using those
forms.
3. Make sure that the trainees are doing their work by signing witness testimony.

2.Review and Ensure compliance relating to Environment Legislation at the


Organization.
Criteria Covered 1. Follow the relevant legal requirements and workplace
environmental procedures
2. Explain the legislation relating to environmental matters that
affect the organisation:
a) Legislation might relate to pollution control, waste disposal,
disposal of goods or equipment (such as electronic equipment), water
discharge and emissions. Responsibilities could be following work
instructions, following environment license conditions, environmental
monitoring and reporting to local environmental authorities.
Identifying risks and carrying out assessments reporting hazards,
recycling, monitoring waste. Hazards could relate to task,
machinery, plant, equipment, substances, other people’s activities
that harm the environment and against regulations
b) Own level of authority, experience and autonomy. Work
instructions, safe
systems of work, regular or ‘one-off’ tasks
c) Own organisation’s reporting and recording systems
3. Follow suppliers’, manufacturers’ and workplace instructions
for the safe use and storage of materials, products and equipment
Ensure the implementation of a waste management system
considering the hierarchy of waste management
4. Ensure the environmental emergency response plans are in
place.
