Sequence of the terms:
is called an A.P.,

where a ➝ 1st term,

d ➝ Common difference

If sequence has n terms then, last term is also denoted by ‘l ’

sometimes.

How many terms are there in the A.P. 3, 7, 11, …., 407?
How many terms are there in the A.P. 3, 7, 11, …., 407?

Ans: 102
Solution:
In an A.P. if a2 + a5 - a3 = 10 and a2 + a9 = 17 then find a20

A 6 B -6 C 8 D -10
In an A.P. if a2 + a5 - a3 = 10 and a2 + a9 = 17 then find a20

A 6 B -6 C 8 D -10
Solution:

Given, Solving (1) and (2)

Also, Thus a = 10 + 3 = 13
Thus
If the pth term of an A.P. is q and the qth term is p, then find its rth

JEE Main 2019

Let Sn denote the sum of the first n terms of an A.P. If S4=16 and
S6= -48, then S10 is equal to

A -260 B -410 C -320 D -380

Solution:
If the ratio of the sum to n terms of two A.P.’s is (5n + 3): (3n + 4),
then the ratio of their 17th terms is

A 172:99 B 168:103 C 175:99 D 171:103

If the ratio of the sum to n terms of two A.P.’s is (5n + 3): (3n + 4),
then the ratio of their 17th terms is

A 172:99 B 168:103 C 175:99 D 171:103

Solution:
Observation
Common terms of two APs with common differences
d1 and d2, are also in AP with common difference = LCM{d1, d2}
Find 10th common term in: 3, 7, 11, 15, 19,… & 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, ….
Solution: Given two series in A.P.
3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35,….
and 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31, 36,…
So common terms will also form in an A.P.
11, 31, 51, ….
Thus T10 = 11 + (10 – 1) 20
= 11 + 180
= 191
Also, common difference of common terms which forms an
A.P. is always LCM of common difference of respective
series.
Key Points for AP
1. Common terms of two AP’s, form an AP.
2. If a1, a2, a3 ➝ AP, then
(i) ka1, ka2, ka3 ➝ AP &
(ii) a1 ± k, a2 ± k, a3 ± k ➝ AP
1. Sum of the terms equidistant from beginning & end is same

2. Sum of first n odd numbers is n2
The digits of a positive integer having three digits are in A.P.
and their sum is 15. The number obtained by reversing the
digits is 594 less than the original number. Find the number.
Solution: Let a - d, a, a + d be three digits of the positive integer.
⸫ The given positive integer = (a - d) a (a + d)
Their sum = (a - d) + a + (a + d) = 15
⇒ 3a = 15
⇒a=5
The number obtained by reversing the digits = (a + d) a (a - d)
By the question
100(a + d) + 10a + (a - d) = 100(a - d) + 10a + (a + d) - 594
⇒ 99d = -99d - 594
⇒ 198d = -594
⇒ d = -3
Hence the required number is (5 + 3) (5) (5 - 3), i.e., 852

NOTE

NOTE
No term of GP can be 0.
The first term of a G.P. is 1. The sum of the third and fifth terms is
90. Find the common ratio of the G.P.
Solution:
In a GP we have a1 + a2 + a3 = 13 and a12 + a22 + a32 = 91. Find r

x4 + x2 + 1 = (x2 + x + 1) (x2 - x + 1)
Solution:

Let G.P. series be a, ar, ar2,……

Dividing (2) and (1)
a1 = a, a2 = ar, a3 = ar2
Now, given
a1 + a2 + a3 = 13 a(1 + r2 - r) = 7 …(3)
a + ar + ar2 = 13 Dividing (1) and (3)
a(1 + r + r2) = 13 …(1)
Also, a12 + a22 + a32 = 91
a2(1 + r2 + r4) = 91 …(2) 7 + 7r + 7r2 = 13 + 13r2 - 13r
Solution:
Sum of infinite number of terms in G.P. is 20 and sum of their
squares is 100. Then find the common ratio of G.P.
