1. Loosen both drive shafts at the final drive. → REMOVING DRIVE SHAFT - section on
"Removing"

2. Remove rear left wheel bearing housing (wheel carrier) without separating the drive shaft from
the wheel bearing housing. → REMOVING REAR WHEEL BEARING HOUSING (WHEEL
CARRIER) - section on "Removing"

3. Lower the wheel carrier with the drive shaft.

4. Fit a stopper on the opening on the drive shaft at the final drive.

5. Remove heat protection on the cardan shaft at the tunnel support. → REMOVING REAR
CARDAN SHAFT - section on "Removing"

6. Loosen tunnel support for cardan shaft and leave the cardan shaft lying on the struts. →
REMOVING REAR CARDAN SHAFT - section on "Removing"

7. Mark the position of the cardan shaft with respect to the rear final drive.

8. Press the cardan shaft off the rear final drive pin using a mounting lever -A- .

9. Loosen center bearing holder -1- and tie up the cardan shaft in the cardan tunnel.

10. Only For Vehicles With PDCC:

CAUTION: Kinked or overstretched lines

1. Leaks in the hydraulic system

→ Only lower anti-roll bar slightly and secure it to the chassis.

Loosen rear anti-roll bar.

1. 10.1. Unscrew four fastening screws -1- on the anti-roll bar -2- at the rear axle
carrier and lower the anti-roll bar until you have easy access to the two screws on the
rear final drive -3- .

2. 10.2. Secure the anti-roll bar at this position on the axle mount.

11. Unscrew fastening screw -1- on the rear axle carrier at the front. Always counter with a ring
wrench.

12. Unscrew two fastening screws -2- on the rear axle carrier at the rear. Always counter with a
ring wrench.

13. Tip up the drive flange -A- .

14. Get a second person to help you tip the final drive to the left -A- at the same time and lower it
slowly -B- . Do not bend the drive shaft as far as it can go.

15. Remove final drive from the drive shaft at the rear right.

16. Fit a stopper on the opening on the drive shaft at the final drive.

Information

Screws that are tightened with a torque angle must be replaced with new ones .

1. Place the final drive on a transmission jack with the help of another person and secure with a
retaining strap. A second person is needed until → 5 .

2. Remove stopper from the drive shaft flange at the right.

3. Fit final drive on the drive shaft at the right. → INSTALLING DRIVE SHAFT - section on
"Installing"

4. Align the final drive at the same time -A- and lower it slowly -B- . Do not bend the drive shaft
as far as it can go.

5. Fit the final drive by gradually tipping the drive flange upwards -A- . Do not bend the drive
shaft as far as it can go.

6. Tighten fastening screw on the rear axle carrier at the front to →

Initial Tightening: 90 Nm (67 ft. lb.) → Final Tightening: 90° .

Always counter with a ring wrench.

7. Tighten two fastening screw on the rear axle carrier at the rear to → Initial Tightening: 90 Nm
(67 ft. lb.) → Final Tightening: 90° . Always counter with a ring wrench.

8. Only For Vehicles With PDCC:

Tighten four fastening screws -1- used to secure the anti-roll bar -2- to the rear axle carrier. →
4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR REAR AXLE - section on "Installing"

9. Replace circlip at the input flange of the rear final drive.

10. Position the cardan shaft at the marking on the rear final drive.

11. Fit the cardan shaft by jerking it onto the pin on the final drive. Drive on the shaft using a piece
of wood -A- if necessary.

12. Secure the tunnel support for the cardan shaft. → INSTALLING REAR CARDAN SHAFT -
section on "Installing"

13. Install heat protection on the cardan shaft at the tunnel support. → INSTALLING REAR
CARDAN SHAFT - section on "Installing"

14. Place the left wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft on the transmission support. Use a
rubber base to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! → Assembly aid for installing wheel
carrier (shown as an example)

15. Raise the wheel bearing housing and drive shaft into installation position using the
transmission support.

16. Secure the wheel bearing housing. → INSTALLING REAR WHEEL BEARING HOUSING
(WHEEL CARRIER) - section on "Installing"

1. Install rear-differential lock servo motor. → INSTALLING SERVO MOTOR FOR

2. The cardan shaft must not be repaired.

3. Do not kink the rear cardan shaft; only store and transport it in elongated position.

4. Set rear cardan shaft with the holder down facing upwards.

5. Mark the position of all parts in relation to each other before removal. If the parts are not
re-installed at the same position, this will result in too much imbalance, which could
cause damage to the mount and humming noises.

Information

Mark the positions of all parts in relation to each other prior to removal. If the parts are not
re-installed in the same position, this will result in too much imbalance, which could cause damage
to the mount and humming noises .

Information

When removing the front cardan shaft from the transfer gear only or from the front final drive only
or when removing the rear cardan shaft from the rear final drive, the particular cardan shaft must
be tied up or supported .

The cardan shafts must not be repaired .

Information

The circlips on the transmission journal must always be replaced. These must be pressed on radially.

1. Remove engine-bay guard holder.

1. 1.1. Unscrew the two fastening nuts -arrows- used to secure the engine-bay guard
holder to the body.

2. 1.2. Unscrew fastening screw in the center.

3. 1.3. Remove the two engine-bay guard holders on the left and right.

2. Mark the installation position -arrow- of the cardan shaft on the transfer gear and on the front
final drive.

3. Press the cardan shaft off the transfer gear journal and front final drive using a mounting lever
-A- .

4. Remove front cardan shaft.

Information

The circlips on the transmission journal must always be replaced. These must be pressed on radially.

1. Always replace the circlip on the transfer gear journal and rear final drive. This must be
pressed on radially.

2. Turn the cardan shaft to the previously made marks and fit it onto the journal by jerking it but
without tilting the cardan shaft.

3. Check that the cardan shaft is fitted securely by pulling on it with your hand. Then press on the
shaft again in the direction of the transmission journal.

1. 3.1. If the cardan shaft comes off when pulled off by hand, the circlips will need to be
replaced again.

4. Further assembly is carried out in the reverse order of removal. → Tightening torque: 9 Nm
(6.5 ft. lb.)

Important notes:

The cardan shaft must not be repaired.

Do not kink the rear cardan shaft; only store and transport it in elongated position.

Set rear cardan shaft with the holder down facing upwards.

Mark the position of all parts in relation to each other before removal.

Re-install at the same position (possible bearing damage and humming noise due to imbalance if
not reinstalled at the same position).

REMOVING REAR CARDAN SHAFT > REMOVING REAR CARDAN SHAFT

Information

Do not kink the cardan shaft; only store it facing upwards in elongated position with the center
bearing holder .

The cardan shaft is secured to the journal with a circlip and can be pressed off with a strong jerk .

To prevent the cardan shaft from being damaged, a second mechanic is required to remove the
rear cardan shaft .

Information

When removing the front cardan shaft from the transfer gear only or from the front final drive only
or when removing the rear cardan shaft from the rear final drive, the particular cardan shaft must
be tied up or supported .

The cardan shafts must not be repaired .

Information

The circlips on the transmission journal must always be replaced. These must be pressed on radially.

1. Unscrew the heat shield -1- and heat shield holder -2- from the tunnel support and remove
the tunnel support.

1. Mark the positions of all parts in relation to each other prior to removal. If the parts are
not re-installed in the same position, this will result in too much imbalance, which could
cause damage to the mount and humming noises .

2. Mark the installation position of the damper and remove the damper

3. Mark the installation position of the cardan shaft -arrow- on the transfer gear and on the rear
final drive.

4. Remove tunnel support.

5. Press the cardan shaft off the transfer gear journal and rear final drive using a mounting lever
-A- .

6. Screw off center bearing holder -1- (arrows).

7. Pull the front and rear cardan shaft off the journal and remove in a downward direction.

8. Set down the cardan shaft with the center bearing holder facing upwards.

Information

The circlips on the transmission journal must always be replaced. These must be pressed on radially.

1. Always replace the circlip on the transfer gear journal and rear final drive. This must be
pressed on radially.

2. Fit the cardan shaft with the help of a second mechanic and screw on the center bearing.

3. Turn the cardan shaft to the previously made marks and fit it onto the journal by jerking it but
without tilting the cardan shaft.

4. Check that the cardan shaft is fitted securely by pulling on it with your hand. Then press on the
shaft again in the direction of the transmission journal.

1. 4.1. If the cardan shaft comes off when you pull it, the circlips will need to be
replaced again.

5. Further assembly is carried out in reverse order to removal.

1. 1.1. Half-fill the space between the sealing and dust lips -arrow- on the new sealing
ring with sealing grease.

2. 1.2. Mask the splines on the operator shaft with adhesive tape to prevent damage to
the new sealing ring.

3. 1.3. Slide the sealing ring as far as it will go onto the final drive.

4. 1.4. Tap the sealing ring in as far as it will go using a thrust piece Assembly Tool
T10430 . Do not bend the sealing ring. → Installing sealing ring

3. Pull in rubber mounting in direction of travel until installation position is reached. Measure
distance between assembly fixture ring and housing using Calliper Gauge Nr. 139 Pos. 1 . →
Distance: 7.5 mm+/- 0.1 mm

to-reach components .

5. Remove transfer gear.

Do not pull the transfer gear against the transmission with the fastening screws as this can tilt the
transfer gear.

1. Installation is performed in reverse order. Pay particular attention to the following:

1. 1.1. Fit and secure the transfer gear with the help of another person.

2. 1.2. Check that dowel sleeves for centering the transmission/transfer gear in the
transmission are fitted. These must be inserted if necessary.

3. 1.3. Grease splines on the drive shaft from the transfer gear and splines on the
output shaft from the transmission with lubricant for clutch plate splines (Part No.
000.043.024.00).

4. 1.4. Slide the transfer gear fully onto the transmission and at the same time, guide
the splines of the drive shaft/transfer gear and output shaft/transmission together so
that they are centered. If the splines are positioned correctly, the transfer gear will
slide as far as it can go against the transmission.

2. Fit and tighten new aluminum screws on the transfer gear evenly -arrows- .

1. Unscrew oil inspection plug -A- using tool Special Inserts Model AB 170 .

2. The oil level is correct if the oil reaches the lower edge of the inspection window.

3. If this is not the case, top up the oil. → TOPPING UP OIL FOR ALL-WHEEL FINAL DRIVE -
section on "Topping up"

4. Screw in oil inspection plug -A- with a new sealing ring. To do this, use special tool Special
Inserts Model AB 170 and Accessory For Torque Wrench: Open Ring Wrench Insert, a/f
13 + Adapter 98-1 . → Tightening torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lb.)

2. Use Manual Metering Pump WE 1372 to fill oil into the inspection plug opening -A- .

1. 2.1. The oil fill quantity is specified in the table Oil adjustment specifications for
front-axle final drive and rear axle differential .

2. 2.2. The oil level in the front-axle final drive can be measured using an angled piece
of wire, for example.

3. Screw in oil inspection plug -A- with new sealing ring. To do this, use special tool Special
Inserts Model AB 170 and accessory for torque wrench: open ring wrench insert, a/f 13
+ adapter 98-1 . → Tightening torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lb.)

1. Slide oil collecting container under the vehicle.

WARNING: Hot fluid

1. Danger of scalding

→ Let the fluid cool down.

→ Wear personal protective gear.

2. Unscrew the oil drain plug -2- and drain the oil.

3. Screw in new oil drain plug -2- . → Tightening torque: 17 Nm (13 ft. lb.)

4. Unscrew the oil inspection plug -1- .

Information

Vehicle must be horizontal in order to fill the transfer box.

Information

Use only oil approved by Porsche.

5. Fill in oil up to the lower edge of the inspection opening -1 - using Manual Metering Pump
WE 1372 .

6. Screw in new oil inspection plug -1- . → Tightening torque: 17 Nm (13 ft. lb.)

2. Screw in tapping screw -arrow- with a diameter of 4 mm.

3. Pull out sealing ring using Puller T10055 . → Sealing ring, inner drive

1. Lightly oil the outer circumference of the new sealing ring.

2. Half-fill the space between the sealing and dust lips with sealing grease.

3. Tap the sealing ring in as far as it will go using Thrust Piece T10448 . Do not bend the sealing
ring.

2. Pierce a hole in the center of the sealing ring using a mandrel.

Information

1. Do not damage the drive shaft sealing face .

2. Do not screw tapping screw in too far to avoid damaging the bearing behind it .

3. Screw in tapping screw with a diameter of 4 mm -arrow- .

4. Pull out sealing ring using puller T10055 .

1. Lightly oil the outer circumference of the new shaft sealing ring.

2. Half-fill the space between the sealing and dust lips with sealing grease.

3. Tap the sealing ring in as far as it will go using Thrust Piece T10449 . Do not bend the sealing
ring. → Installing sealing ring

4. Tap new dust boot -1- in until it locks onto the shaft using Assembly Tool T10399 .

5. Replace O-ring -1- and circlip -2- .
