1.

Determine the number of longitudinal bars and spacing of transverse reinforcements at critical
section of beam AD of the floor framing shown (basic area) in figure 1 to support the dead and
live loads given below. The structure is a two-storey residential building.

Use:

Concrete:
fc’=21 MPa
Concrete Cover=40mm
ϒc=23.6 kN/m3

Longitudinal reinforcement:
db= 16mm diameter deformed bar
fy=276 MPa

Transverse reinforcement:
dbt= 10mm diameter deformed bar
fyt=276 MPa

Floor properties:
S-1, 100mm thick stone reinforced concrete slab
Floor Finish:
S-1, 25mm Concrete fill finish

Ceiling:
12 mm gypsum board on suspended steel channel system

The beam is also carrying a 2.8m high-150mm thick concrete hollow block (16.5 kN/m3 density)
plastered both sides.
Beam properties:
Reinforced concrete.
Use the minimum thickness from the table shown below and a d/b ratio = 1.5
