1.) a. What are the social factors that account for using a particular variety?
Certain social factors have been relevant in accounting for the particular variety of language used. Four
social factors relate to the users of language : the participants, the setting, the topic and the function.
1. The participants: who is speaking and who are they speaking to? Who is talking to whom
2. The setting or social context of the interaction: where are they speaking?
3. The topic: what is being talked about? The topic has proved an influence on language choice.
4. The function: why are they speaking? The aim or purpose of the interaction (informative, social) may
be relevant.
Consider which variety you use: in your home, at university, at the shops in a restaurant.
Do you ever use more than one variety in the same social context? If so why? (25 points)
