A critical ability that has been extensively exploited in power battery cooling and preheating is the battery
thermal management system. It may make sure the power battery (lead acid, lithium- ion) runs steadily and
safely at the right temperature. Due to their high energy density and prolonged cycle life, power batteries
are frequently used in electric vehicles and consumer electronics due to their desirable energy densities,
long lifetimes, and low self-discharge rates.
There are a few options to cool an electric car battery, the different types of Cooling system in Electric
Vehicles (EV’s) Battery pack are as follows:
In this paper [2], an optimization design framework is proposed to minimize the maximum temperature difference
(MTD) of automotive power battery pack. The results show that the serpentine cooling channel has better cooling
effect.
In this paper [3], the use of flat heat pipe as an effective and low-energy device to mitigate the temperature. of a
battery module designed for a HEV application was investigated.
In this paper [4] provides a review based on previous studies, summarizes the electrical and thermal characteristics of
batteries and how they are affected by the operating temperature
he study on the thermal management system of power batteries is summarized in this article [5], which also compares
and evaluates two different types of heating systems as well as four different cooling systems, including air cooling,
liquid cooling, phase-change materials, and heat pipes.
This paper [6] provides a thorough analysis of the research done on particular type of passive thermal
devices, known as Heat Pipes.
In this paper [7] The thermal behaviour of valve regulated lead acid batteries with an evaporative
cooling-based thermal management system is experimentally examined during the charging
process of an E-bike.
This paper [8] discusses about thermal study and testing of a battery pack for the GMIDOE series
HEV made up of high-power lead-acid battery modules.

COMSOL SIMULATION
vThe conducted simulation demonstrates how temperature distribution takes place in a battery pack
during a 4C discharge
vSix parallel-connected pairs are then connected in series to create the full pack — a configuration also
called 6s2p
vThis configuration for the lithium ion battery pack is quite common in portable devices like
skateboards, toys, drones, and medical equipment
vThe symmetry of the problem is used twice so that only the temperature distribution for three batteries
needs to be solved for
Model Definition
Ø Three 21700 battery cylinders (21 mm in
diameter, 70 mm high) are placed adjacent
to each other
Ø Small connecting strips of aluminum are
located at the top and bottom of the
cylinders according to the 6s2p
configuration
Ø The whole pack is assumed to be wrapped in
plastic, forming a domain filled with air
Ø Assuming a nominal capacity of 4 Ah for
each cell and nominal voltage of 3.7 V, the
battery pack has a total nominal capacity of
approximately 177.6 Wh
RESULTS
§ The figure shows the temperature
distribu3on in the pack at the end
of the simula3on, where the
solu3on data has been mirrored
twice to illustrate the temperature
of the full 6s2p pack
§ The innermost parts of the pack
experience a temperature about
2ºC higher than the outermost
parts
RESULTS
§ The figure shows a plot of the
individual cell voltages during the
discharge
§ The outermost cell (Cell 1) exhibits
a slightly lower discharge voltage, a
result of the ohmic drop and
§ exchange current being slightly
lower, and the diffusion time
constant slightly higher, for the
lower temperature, but the effect
is small
RESULTS
• The corresponding
temperatures are shown in
the graph as in the previous
graph
