local and regional
BBC Local Radio (also referred to as Local BBC Radio) is the BBC's local and regional
radio division for England and the Channel Islands, consisting of forty stations.
Compared to regional stations, BBC local radio stations cover a smaller geographic area.
BBC radio Manchester and BBC radio Merseyside are two examples of local radio stations.
There are numerous regional radio stations, such as Radio Cymru, Radio Derby, Radio
Cumbria, and Radio Berkshire.
The difference between regional and local radio is that regional radio serves an audience of
a large geographical area like a whole country or county. Local radio serves a smaller
targeted audience of a local city or town.
National commercial radio
National commercial radio is another sort of radio that differs
from the BBC in terms of finances and management. Through
sponsorships and commercials.
The radio stations can broadcast whatever they want because
they are able to independently fund themselves rather than rely
on the general public.

Typically, large, corporate companies like Global are the owners

of the vast majority of national commercial radio stations.
Local commercial radio stations

• Aimed at local communities as it is aimed to the local community rather

than a wide variety of people across the UK.
• These stations are usually owned by bigger radio stations. Local radio
stations are funded through advertisements and sponsorships

Community radio
Community Radio refers to a system of licensing small, micro-local, non-profit
radio stations. In its early days, the pilot scheme was known as Access
Radio.

The staff such as presenters and technical team will likely be working
voluntary and are working for free.

The purpose of the community radio is to serve smaller communities

discussing things like local issues and affairs.
Target Audience
Target audience is a particular group at which a product such as a film or
advertisement is aimed.

All products have a target audience however this doesn’t mean that people
who aren’t a part of the target audience can't enjoy the product themselves.
Scheduling
• Scheduling affects the content of a programme.
For example, the content of a breakfast radio show could potentially have a
younger audience listening. However, scheduling late at night younger
audiences may be asleep and the content will change.
