Seismic Load (SL)

This load is consisting of two parts. For calculation of inertia forces, (first part) the formulae of IS:1893-2002 have been
used. However for the second part (viz. Hydrodynamic effect of liquid) the old code IS:893-1984 has been used, as the
new code is silent regarding this issue.

a) Seismic Force due to RCC wall (Inertia Force)

Seismic Loads are calculated as per IS 1893:2002. Conside DBE for Category 2 structure

b) Seismic Force due to Hydrodynamic Pressure of Water

Pressure on the wall is given by
pw = a h * w * h * √3 [ y/h - 1/2 (y/h)2 ] * tanh √3 (l/h) Ref. Cl.5.2.7.2 of IS : 1893-1984

For structures on ground, ah = b I a0 = 0.075 Refer CL. 3.4.2.3 of IS:1893-1984

h = hL = 5.50 m
w = gw = 10.00 kN/m3
l = 5.00 m
y

hL = 5.50

x tanh √3 (l/h) = 0.918

a h w h √3 = 7.145
Thus, it can be considered as
2l
pw = 6.557 * [y/h - 1/2 (y/h)2]

As an alternative the total force on the Wall could have been found by the following expression:
P = a h * w * (h2/√3) * tanh √3 (l/h)

This is obvious from the equation that the

pressure distribution is parabolic. ( This has also
been illustrated in the Fig. 9A, Page 22 of SP22).
For further calculation based on Moody's Chart,

this parabola (shown in dotted line here) has

5.50
h1 been considered as an equivalent triangle having
same area.

Base of the triangle is

= 11.82 * 2 / 5.5
= 4.30 kN/m2
4.30 KN/sq. m

Pressure on the bottom portion is given by

pb = a h * w * h * √3 / 2 * sinh √3 (x/h) / cosh √3 (l/h) Ref. Cl.5.2.7.2 of IS : 1893-1984

= 1.4188 * sinh √3 (x/h)
