Early background
• Born October 14, 1888 to Annie Dyer and Harold Beauchamp in Wellington,
New Zealand
• Her nom de plume, Katherine Mansfield, is based on her grandmother’s
maiden name.
• Attends school in Wellington, and publishes her first work in the school
newspaper.
• Takes cello lessons and dreams of a future musical career.
• Attends Queen’s College in London 1903-1906 where she befriends Ida Baker.

Life in London
• Persuades her father to allow her to return to London in July, 1908.
• Falls in love with Garnet Trowell in Autumn-Winter 1908, and falls pregnant.
• Begins publishing early stories in literary magazines.
• Marries, and then promptly leaves, George Bowden on March 2, 1909.
• Miscarries in the summer of 1909.
• Publishes In a German Pension (1911).

John Middleton Murry
• Meets Murry in December 1911, who becomes a lodger in her home in April 1912.
• Publishes stories in Rhythm and later joins the editorial team.
• Starts a long-standing affair with Murry, though they sometimes live apart.
• Marries Murry on May 3, 1918.
The Bloomsburries
• Attends Lady Ottoline Morrell’s salons in Autumn 1916 where she meets Lytton-
Strachey, Eliot, Woolf.
• Publishes “Prelude” with The Hogarth Press.

After the War
• November 11, 1918.
• Murry stays in London, while Mansfield travels with Ida Baker.
• She and Murry live together infrequently during the period of 1919-1922
• Publishes Bliss and Other Stories in 1920.
• Publishes The Garden Party and Other Stories in 1922.
