CLASSIFICATI ON/ ACTION Antipsychotic A dopamine receptor antagonist and sigmareceptor-active neuroleptic drug.
INDICATION
CONTRAINDICATION
-schizophrenia; -psychosis associated with dementia, -depression, or mania; -Gilles de la Tourette syndrome; -acute behavioral disturbances.
NURSING CONSIDERATI ON -Do not use haloperidol decanoate for IV injections. -Gradually withdraw drug when patient has been on maintenance therapy to avoid withdrawalemergent dyskinesias. -Discontinue drug if serum creatinine, BUN become abnormal or if WBC count is depressed. -Monitor elderly patients for dehydration; -Avoid prolonged exposure to sun, or use sunblock

CLASSIFICATION/ ACTION anti-psychotic It works by changing the actions of chemicals in your brain.
INDICATION -psychotic disorders -schizophrenia or manic-depression, -severe behavioral problems in children. -nausea and vomiting, anxiety before surgery, -chronic hiccups, -acute intermittent porphyria, -symptoms of tetanus.
CONTRAINDICATION
-Comatose or depressed states due to CNS depressants; -blood dyscrasias; bone marrow depression; -liver damage. -Cross allergenicity with other phenothiazines -Reye's Syndrome.
SIDE EFFECTS/ ADVERSE EFFECTS -dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, sleep problems (insomnia); -dry mouth or stuffy nose -constipation; -impotence, trouble having an orgasm. -twitching or uncontrollable movements of your eyes, lips, tongue, face, arms, or legs -seizure
NURSING CONSIDERATION -do not discontinue the drug abruptly - advise client to use sun block -take drug with food -advise that urine may be darken

CLASSIFICATION/ ACTION anticonvulsant Increases level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in brain, reducing seizure activity
INDICATION
CONTRAINDICATION
-Hypersensitivity to drug or tartrazine (some products) -Hepatic impairment -Urea cycle disorders
SIDE EFFECTS/ ADVERSE EFFECTS -Dizziness, -headache, -GI upset, -CNS effects (esp. somnolence), -rash, -cardiovascular effects, -arthralgia, - liver failure, - acute pancreatitis, -clotting abnormalities, -thrombocytopenia, -hyperammonemia, others.
NURSING CONSIDERATION -Closely monitor neurologic status. Watch for seizures. Instruct patient to take with food to minimize GI upset. -Tell patient taking extendedrelease tablets to swallow them whole without chewing or breaking. -Tell patient that valproate syrup shouldn't be taken with carbonated beverages.. -Instruct patient to avoid alcohol..
