INCIDENT REPORT

On January 26, 2023 at 11:52 pm, I was in the middle of preparing for the
examination of my afternoon class while the designated cleaner-learners of section
Quezon were cleaning the classroom when Justine, one of Mrs. Sumampong’s
learners, slapped and pushed a sleeping stray kitten down on the floor. Amidst the
suddenness of the situation, I immediately grab the kitten and made sure to distance
it from Justine, to ensure the learner’s safety just in case the kitten will scratch him
as a reflex of his sudden and unreasonable attack. I then went back to preparing the
test papers. Mrs. Sumampong’s response after the stated situation was to reprimand
the learner by firmly saying: “Justin, you do not do that to a cat or any animal. Wala
Justin then playfully duck to hide
himself while giggling as he took it as a joke, but then suddenly a looming voice
echoed inside our classroom “PWEDE DIAY NA? ASANG BALAOD ANG NAG-
INGON NA PWEDE ANG IRING SA SULOD SA CLASSROOM?!” The voice was too
loud, enough to stun us. We took a look at the source of the voice and saw an
unfamiliar face of a woman. She then continued, still with that looming voice,
“JUSTINE! ALI NA DIRI, MUULI NA TA!”. Turns out, she is the aunt of Justine,
Charito Nuenay. Justine was adamantly shaking his head, as if saying “no” to his
aunt so the aunt resumed her loud talking, “MA’AM DILI GUD NA PWEDE NA
MAGBUHI UG IRING SA CLASSROOM! DAGHAN KOG KAILA NA MAESTRA NA
HILIG KAAYO UG HAYOP PERO DI GINADALA SA CLASSROOM”. Mrs.
Sumampong then clarified in a calm manner, “Ay ma’am dili man na namo alaga
The aunt chose
not to listen to Mrs. Sumampong as she kept on spouting allegations such as “wala
“Makapaak na!” since she is not listening
anymore, Mrs. Sumampong just resumed her work while not saying anything. As the
aunt kept on talking, the volume and harshness of her tone escalated so I took a
glance at the four cleaner-learners. I saw how terrified they were by their body
language and facial expression. I did not want to go beyond my boundary, since
Justin is not my learner, but seeing how terrified the learners were, I knew that it is
my job’s calling to interfere. I step towards the scene saying “Ma’am excuse me po,”
I raised my palm to indicate “stop” or “pause” I faced her then said, “Ma’am yang
mga cats po dyan, nakatira na po yan sila dito sa building way before kami nag
occupy. Now in terms of safety and welfare, pinapakain po namin yan sila para hindi
po manguha ng food ng mga bata plus the learners are aware and trained not to
touch the cats.
mental strain and stress ng mga bata and they will be able to get the value of sharing
the earth to the animals.” She looked at me disrespectfully then responded, “Unya
kung

makapaak? Wala dyud mo kabalo sa balaod dyud!” Of course, I was taken aback
because I was trying my best to explain the situation to her but in return, I am
disrespected. Mrs. Sumampong responded, “Obligasyon ug responsibilidad namo
The aunt still didn’t stop, she insulted
us by saying “Ah mao man dyud na kay kamo ang maestra kamo lang ang tama!” I
then looked at the cleaner-learners who were still there, witnessing the shameful
exchange of harsh words, and felt a rush of embarrassment for the both of us, I and
Mrs. Sumampong. We were humiliated in front of our learners whom we worked so
hard to earn respect from. I just want her to stop so I told her, “Ma’am, stop na po.
Since nag escalate na po ang pangyayari, I will be recording this po ah” I declared,
but my hands were shaking too much so I wasn’t able to do so. She and Justine
went out of the classroom but she still kept on talking, with the same allegations,
tone, and volume. Mrs. Sumampong knew that there are other teachers, learners,
and parents on the corridor so she followed them to calm the aunt down by trying to
explain to her again that the situation she is believing to is not true at all. The attempt
unfortunately failed, and the cleaner-learners were hurriedly going out from the
classroom to escape the situation, so I also followed suit, and arrived at the exact
moment when the aunt said loudly, “DAPAT MAN GUD WALA NANG MGA IRING
DIRA KAY KABALO BITAW MO NA ESPESYAL NA SI JUSTINE! SYEMPRE
MANGHILABOT DYUD NA SYA UG IRING. DALI NA JUSTINE DIDTO NA LANG
SA BALAY, HILABTI TONG MGA IRING NINYO DIDTO SA BALAY.” My heart
shattered after hearing that, especially when Justin started punching the aunt as if
saying that he was hurt and embarrassed, considering that there were parents
around who eventually heard and saw the commotion. I voiced out again by saying,
“ay ma’am streamlined man si Justine, ibig sabihin ma’am pantay pantay yan sila ng
mga bata, yang classroom po kasi simulation yan ng real world po, sa totoong buhay
po pag maging adult na sila, syempre hindi maiiwasan na may ma encounter silang
hayop, sa daan may makakasalubong silang hayop so hindi po dapat ang mundo
ang mag aadjust kay Justine, bilang isang normal na tao, sya po ang aayon sa
mundo.” The aunt responded with, “DILI NA SYA NORMAL SO DAPAT KAMO
KABALO MO NA DILI SYA IEXPOSE UG MGA HAYOP KAY MANGHILABOT
DYUD NA.” With that, I knew she was a lost cause so I went inside our classroom
then gestured to Mrs. Sumampong to stop and get inside, since whatever we say or
do is useless.
She did not stop reiterating her point even when we’re inside, the parents start piling
up as they were fetching their kids. I was about to use the comfort room when her
voice got louder again, so I faced her again and said with firmness in my voice,
“ma’am tama na ba. Pumasok na gani kami sa loob, tama na po.” Still, she didn’t.
Instead she talked to the teachers who were there, she begun telling them her
allegations and even went out of her way by threatening us with: “Akoang anak,
Valedictorian, English

major to siya, kato sya nakabalo to sa balaod. Tan-awon nato kung tam aba gihapon
ng mga maestraha na. Daghan kog kaila na mga maestra diria [insert name of the
teacher] kabalo to sila sa balaod, unya sila [ma’am Sumampong and I] wala sila
ko.” The teachers were just listening intently. After that, she went inside the
classroom to talk to Mrs. Sumampong, in order to give them privacy, I went outside.
As I was on the corridor the teachers asked me what happened, I just answered by
stating what had transpired in a low voice since I did not want to cause disturbance
to their [Mrs. Sumampong and the aunt] conversation. After conversing with Mrs.
Sumampong, she went out again and when she saw me talking with my co-teachers,
she pointed at me while saying in a loud voice “oh tan-awa ikaw man gani ang di
muundang.” I am so done with her so I answered, “ma’am ikaw gud ang naga cause
bintang at kakasigaw.
She snubbed at me, then walked
out while still murmuring her clamor.
