PRESERVATION
TASK 72-00-00-620-801
1. General.
A. The procedures that follow are recommended as the necessary minimum in order
to protect the CF34-8E series engines and components against corrosion and
contamination:
• During periods of storage
• When an engine is not operated
• After exposure of an engine to salt-water of fire-extinguishing agents
• After engine damage.
B. Proactive adherence to preservation procedures is highly recommended because
the corrosion prevention of the bearings is of critical importance. These
procedures are recommended for engines installed on an aircraft that are not
operated, or an engine installed in a stand, or on an engine that will not
be operated. If you remove or install a module or equipment, make sure that
you do a new preservation procedure of the engine. It is highly recommended
that you do the preservation of the engine in a period of 10 days at the
beginning of the inactivity, but in no more than 30 days.
C. The start point of the preservation period is defined as the last time the
engine is run for a minimum of 10 minutes at 70% N1 or after the application
of a preservation procedure as specified in paragraph 2., Index.
D. For all the preservation procedures, do the instructions that follow:
(1) Install the caps and covers on all the open areas of the engine with
their accessories.
(2) Install the protective waterproof covers on all the areas of the engine.
Make sure that the covers are correctly tight.
WARNING: REFER TO THE PRODUCT LABEL AND THE MANUFACTURER'S (MATERIAL) SAFETY
DATA SHEET (SDS) FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON THE HAZARDS, STORAGE, SAFE
HANDLING AND PROPER USE OF THIS PRODUCT.
(3) Do a check of the desiccant (C10-001 ) each 2 months. If the desiccant
(C10-001 ) has a humidity indicator, change it only when the humidity
indicator shows that the desiccant (C10-001 ) is no longer effective.
Refer to Subtask 72-00-00-620-011 (paragraph 5.G.).
(4) Put a tag on the engine to show that the engine is in preservation, type
of preservation, and the preservation date.
E. The procedure recommended for the preservation of the engine will change
related to the interval of time that the engine will not operate, type of
preservation, and if the engine is operable or non-operable.
NOTE: A non-operable engine is one that was removed from an aircraft as a result
of an event such as an in-flight shutdown (IFSD) where the core rotor is
bound and cannot rotate. An engine in the shop in more than one stage of
modular maintenance or disassembly is an example of a non-operable engine.
F. The preservation procedures are recommended as a guide to obey the
precautions you must use to give a sufficient protection to the engine from
contamination during periods of storage or times when you will not operate
the engine. Use the engine preservation procedures that gives the best fit
for the applicable weather and storage conditions.
G. For on-wing preservation, refer to the applicable Embraer Aircraft
Maintenance Manual (Embraer AMM) for the preservation requirements of the

integrated drive generator (IDG) (if applicable) and the hydraulic pump (if
applicable). These components can or cannot be installed during the engine
preservation period. If these components are installed, they are not
affected by the engine preservation. If these components are not installed,
put a cover on the ports of the accessory gearbox (AGB). Also, you must put
a cover on all other ports that do not have accessories.
H. The terms motor, rotate, run, and cycle are used throughout this procedure.
The intent of all of these action terms is to put a coat on the bearing with
an oil/corrosion inhibitor to the maximum engine length possible. In some
cases, these action terms can be used interchangeably because the coating
intent is done.
I. Do the preservation procedure for spare/stored engines to put the necessary
preservation renewal procedures into use. Monitor the procedures regularly
to make sure that you do the necessary action before the preservation period
has expired. Examine and modify the engine preservation protection
equipment/covers to keep the engine in serviceable condition.
WARNING: REFER TO THE PRODUCT LABEL AND THE MANUFACTURER'S (MATERIAL) SAFETY DATA
SHEET (SDS) FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON THE HAZARDS, STORAGE, SAFE HANDLING AND
PROPER USE OF THIS PRODUCT.
J. If the engine is NOT stored in a temperature and humidity controlled
environment, use of desiccant (C10-001 ) is highly recommended. Install the
desiccant (C10-001 ) as specified in Subtask 72-00-00-620-011 (paragraph
5.G.).
K. The up to two years preservation period can be extended as follows:
(1) If the engine has a cover installed and is stored in an indoor location,
the 2-years preservation period can be extended by 2 months and to a
maximum of 26 months. After engine installation, do an inspection of the
master chip detector (MCD) sensor each day for 5 days.
(2) If the engine has covers installed and is stored in an outdoor location,
the 2-year preservation period can be extended by 1 month to a maximum
of 25 months. After engine installation, do an inspection of the MCD
sensor each day for 5 days.
