BS Pharmacy 3A Public Health

ASSIGNMENT!

Role of Pharmacist in Public Health

Accordingly, Public Health can be defined as “what we in term of

society do to persuade the conditions in which people can be healthy”. it is
not about medicine, but it also “emphasizes” the prevention of disease and
the needs of the population health as a whole.

Based on the article I’ve read in 1981, the role of the pharmacist in
public health is defined by the American Public Health Association
(APHA). This association outlined that the pharmacist is now escalating
beyond the dispensation and distribution of medicines, and health
supplies. APHA believes that all pharmacists can contribute to the
promotion of public health

In this article I have learned that the pharmacist can provide a lot of
services to public health which also include pharmacotherapy, provide
care, and the prevention measures. There are five (5) activities where
pharmacists can play an important role to promote public health: 1.
Population-based Care, they provide a disease management programs with
using tools such as medication-use evaluation, evidence-based disease
management programs that is planned in accordance to the needs of the
community/population in the community or in institution. 2. Prevention of
Disease and Medication Safety in this type of program or activities a
pharmacist indulged in the prevention and control of disease in many
ways. In which pharmacist can help the establishment of some screening
program to check out the status of immunization and to identify some of
undiagnosed medical conditions. Also reducing the number of hospital
admission resulting from the drug therapy mismanagement, fostering
programs to intercept counterfeit medication. 3. Health Education where
pharmacist can develop health education policies and programs on the safe
and effective medication use and other public health topics which are
tobacco cessation and exercise and healthy nutrition. Moreover, pharmacist
can educate community leaders like public office holders, legislators,
school officials, regulators and religious leaders who are involved in public
health customs about the safe and effective use of medication. 4. Public
Health Policy is where pharmacist can participate in the development of
policy during the public health emergencies or crisis. 5. Research and
Training where pharmacist must get adequate education and training to
carry out his responsibility in public health.

In addition, the role of pharmacist in public health has play a vital

role as they are accessible and are easily available source for providing safe
and effective use of medication to the public.
