Character Sketch: Demetrius

In our adaption, Demetrius is named Evan. The character from Shakespeare’s A

Midsummer Night’s Dream is going to be adapted in a slightly different way. As in the original

play, Demetrius has, in my opinion, not a lot of strong character traits. Evan is going to be more

specific in our adaption. Evan is a 16-year-old boy, who is a sophomore in a typical American

high school. Evan was raised in a middle-income family and has an older brother Charlie, who

is on the football team. However, Evan is not on good terms with Charlie. One reason for that

is that Charlie is part of the cool kids in school and Evan cannot identify himself with them. As

his parents spend a lot of time supporting Charlie, he developed his interests and a life that is

different from his brother. Evan could be described as a stereotypical Nerd. He is a person who

is seen as overly intellectual. Evan is truly clever and excels at school. His teachers like him,

and he only gets As in his classes. He is also the head of the chess club. In his spare time, he

may spend inordinate amounts of time on topics of science fiction or fantasy such as “Star

Wars.” However, he is not introverted and does not lack social skills. In fact, Evan is extremely

charming and especially parents tend to like him. This is also the reason why Hermia’s father

wants him to go to prom with her, even though she rather wants to go with Lysander. Evan is

responsible and accountable and therefore he impresses a lot of parents. Additionally, Evan can

be described as a bit shy with his fellow students, quirky, pedantic, and a bit unattractive. Evan

is very polite, which again impresses his teachers and parents of other students. But fellow

students might get annoyed by his behavior after some time. For example, he calls Lysander by

his full name, because he wants to be polite. He has a strong sense of what is right and what is

wrong. For example, he would never take drugs, as he knows it is illegal. Alcohol is a taboo for

him, as he is only 16 years old and he does not normally go to parties. Evan has a strong opinion

on every topic and is not afraid of sharing it. Normally, he sticks to his words. Further, he can

be described as not smooth and sometimes awkwardly honest. Evan is not someone you would

instantly describe as 'attractive' He is quite small as his height is only 5.2. but he tries to overact

it with his intelligence. He usually wears blue jeans, a plaid polo shirt, and white sneakers. But

his most recognizable features are the typical nerd-glasses. He is not athletic at all and his

movements look quite stiff. When he heard that he should go to prom with Hermia, he was

being very rational and just thought how to get her to prom and back. When he realized that

Hermia would rather go to prom with Lysander, he still insisted on going with her, as her father

wanted them to go. As Evan is really responsible, he would never want to disappoint her father.
