Lesson Plan

Time Allotment: One class session

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions.
2. Apply the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions.
3. Show appreciation in working with group activity.
Subject Matter:
Topic: Evaluating Algebraic Expression
Reference: E-math by Orlando A. Oronce and Marilyn O. Mendoza
Instructional Materials: Visual aids, Graphic Organizer, PowerPoint presentation, laptop,
projector, activity envelope, chalk and board.
Instructional Procedure:
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Daily Routine

1. Prayer A student will lead the prayer.

Class let’s all stand up. Dear God…………… Amen
Before we start, _________ lead the
prayer.

2. Greetings

Good morning, Class. Good morning, Sir.

3. Attendance

Is everybody present for today? Yes Sir, everybody is present today.

B. Priming/ Activating Prior Knowledge

1. Drill

Class, find the answer to the following

multi operation mathematical expression
by connecting the expression in column A
to the corresponding answer in column B.

Very good!

2. Review
Sir, we solve multi operational expression by
How do we solve multi operation following the rules of PEMDAS.
mathematical expression?
Very good!
The student will state the answer.
And what does PEMDAS stand for? Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, Subtraction.
That is correct! We solve multi operation
expression by following the operation
order of Parenthesis, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, and
Subtraction.

C. Lesson Development

1. Motivation/ Activity Students will raise their hands.

Sir, we hear substitution in basketball,
Class, where do we usually hear the word
volleyball, etc.
substitution?

Sir, the player is replaced by another player.

And how do we substitute in basketball?
That’s right.
Now class, we will be having an activity
called “Sub me in”.

(The Teacher will present a PowerPoint

presentation of the activity “Sub me in”.)

Find the equivalent value of the given

words by substituting the numerical value
above to each letter of the word and adding
all the numerical digits.

For example

Yes sir.

Yes sir, we are ready.

Did you get it class? A student will be called to answer.
Are you ready class?
Who would like to try the first word?

Yes sir.

Very good, does everyone have the same answers?

2. Analysis Sir, we find the numerical value of the given

words.
What did we do in our activity? Sir, we substitute the corresponding value in
each letter.
Correct. And how did we find the value of
the given words? Sir we performed the indicated operation, we
add all the value.
And then what’s next?

Very good.

Class, what number is substituted or

replaced for the variable in a given
algebraic expression, the expression takes
an numerical value, And finding the value
is what we call “Evaluating the Algebraic
Expression”.

Sir, we substitute the given value of x in the

equation.

For letter a, how do we evaluate? A student will be called to substitute the value
What should we do first? of x.
6(0¿2 + 3 =
Correct. Can someone show us how to
substitute the value of x in our equation?

Very good!

Now what is the next step?

Since we got here a multi operation

equation, what should we do?

Excellent! Can someone demonstrate on

how to apply the rules of PEMDAS in our
equation?

That is correct!
Now for letter b, x=2
Who would like to try following the same
steps?
And for the last example, x=1/2

1. Substitute the given value to the variable

2. Perform the indicated operation by
3. Abstraction following the rules of PEMDAS.

Now class, in evaluating algebraic equation

expression, what are the steps we need to
follow?

Very good.

4. Application

Now that you already know how to

evaluate algebraic expression, we will be
having a group activity. I will divide you
into two groups. Each group will choose
their leaders. The leader will be the one
who can ask me about the activity and he is
also responsible for dividing the task
between the members of the group.

Each group will be given an activity

envelope where you will find the materials
for the activity and the expressions that
your group will be going to evaluate.

Now, the group activity will be scored

according to this standard.
Group 1.

Find the value of each expression and write

the answers in the circles.
When x=5
Students will answer.

D. Evaluation

Class, get a ½ sheet of paper and complete

the table by evaluating the given
expression.

E. Assignment
For the assignment evaluate
2 2
x + xy+ y
