COVID-19 IMPACTS ON STUDENTS LEARNING

Last March 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte declared a national lockdown in order to prevent the
spread of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The virus named SARS-CoV-2 which was
originated at Wuhan City of China in early December 2019. It is very contagious and spreads
quickly that results to over 6 million people have died (currently) from the said disease causing
respiratory symptoms that can feel much like a cold, flu or pneumonia.
It was a global health crisis and it affects also the education in the country. Although the
Department of Education released different learning delivery modalities such as Modular (MDL
print), Online (ODL) and blended learning teachers knew that there is something wrong about
the knowledge of the pupils. Some parents can’t afford to choose the Online Distance Learning
because of the lack of money to buy gadgets and loads for internet therefore they use the
modular distance learning. There are so much problems and struggles that encountered in the
Education in the Philippines.
Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the government need to ensure that the education and learning
continue. As one of the goals of education is to promote quality learning and develop the child in
all aspects, behavioral and academic performance. Acquire and embrace the ways of education in
the new normal.
This School Year 2022-2023 the lockdown and community quarantine has been lifted so the
DepEd decides to have a full face to face classes nationwide. In the first quarter Regional
Diagnostic Test have taken by the pupils to evaluate the learnings during the pandemic. Sadly
there are some learners who did not passed the minimum level of proficiency resulting a low
passing rate. It also affects the reading comprehension of the pupils thus there is a need for
intervention specifically in literary, numeracy and science processes and skills.
Moreover higher officials, teachers, parents and learners should work hand in hand together to
enhance the learning capacity of the pupils. Last March, 2023 Regional Mid-Year Assesment has
also been conducted to identify and assess the learning gaps of the learners. Seminars about the
Education 4.0 has been imparted to all the teachers to apply it in teaching strategies and
techniques. Deped Secretary Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio released new agenda to resolve basic woes,
