Problem Set (5)

Problem (1)
Two loads connected in parallel are respectively 2 kW at a pf of 0.75 leading and 4 kW at
a pf of 0.95 lagging. Calculate the pf of the two loads. Find the complex power supplied
by the source.

Problem (2)
Given the circuit below, find Io and the overall complex power supplied.

Problem (3)

For the circuit shown, find Vs and all the components of the source power.
Problem (4)

A 220-V rms 60-Hz source supplies 3 loads connected in parallel, as shown

(a) Find the power factor of the parallel combination.
(b) Calculate the value of the capacitance connected in parallel that will raise the power
factor to unity

Problem (5)
In the circuit shown; when a capacitor of a value C = 109 F is connected in parallel with
the voltage source the source power factor improved from 0.894 lagging to 0.95 lagging.
If the supply frequency is 50 Hz:
1. Find the active power P and reactive power Q of Load 3.
2. Find the impedance of Load 2.
