WHAT IS THE AIM OF
CAVITE MUTINY?
TO GET RID OF THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT IN THE

PHILIPPINES
TWO MAJOR EVENTS
THAT HAPPENED
THE TWO MAJOR EVENTS

HAPPENED IN 1872
FIRST,
was the Cavite Mutiny

SECOND,
was the matyrdom of the three priests in the persons of Father Mariano
Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora (GOMBURZA) which is the
awakening of nationalism among Filipinos.
GOMBURZA Father Jose
Burgos
Rev. Mariano
Gomez
The term "GOMBURZA" refers
to the 3 catholic priests who
were executed by the
spaniards after the Cavite
Mutiny
Father Jacinto
They were accused of promoting Zamora
the secularization of the
Philippine clergy and the rights
of the Filipino people
DIFFERING
ACCOUNTS ABOUT
THE MUTINY
THE SPANISH PERSPECTIVE
Historian Jose Montero y Vidal documented
the event, while Gov. Gen. Rafael Izquierdo
used it to implicate the native clergy and call
for their secularization.
Both accounts cited the abolition of privileges
enjoyed by the workers of the Cavite arsenal
as the main reason for the uprising, but also
pointed to other causes, including the
influence of liberal and republican literature,
and the animosity of the native clergy towards
the Spanish friars.
THE SPANISH PERSPECTIVE
The alleged conspiracy involved The uprising was easily crushed, and
educated leaders, mestizos, the instigators were punished
abogadillos, residents of Manila and severely, with the GOMBURZA
Cavite, and the native clergy, who (Father Mariano Gómez, Father José
planned to liquidate high-ranking Apolonio Burgos, and Father Jacinto
Spanish officers followed by the Zamora) executed by strangulation,
massacre of the friars. and other leaders sentenced to life
imprisonment.
The alleged signal for the attack was
the firing of rockets from the walls of
Intramuros.
RESPONSE TO INJUSTICE: Tavera was known for his
THE FILIPINO writings about different aspects
of Philippine culture. He wrote
VERSION OF THE the Filipino version of the terror
in Cavite.
INCIDENT
It was only a simple mutiny by
Filipino soldiers and workers at
the Cavite arsenal to the
hardship caused by Izquierdo's
harsh policies (abolition of
Dr. Trinidad priveleges and prohibition of the
founding of the school of arts
Hermenigildo
and trades)
Pardo de Tavera
Insisted that the mutiny that
happened was only so secure
goods and services such as
materials and education for the
country.

However, the friars reported

that mutiny that happened as a
broad conspiracy against the
Spanish government by
aboloshing their sovereignty.

The accounts of mutiny suggest

tha the Spanish Revolution in
Spain during that time added
more determination to the
natives to overthrow the current
EDMUND PLAUCHUT
colonial Spanish government.
THE TRUTH OF WHAT

REALLY HAPPENED
FIRST,
"there was dissatisfaction among the workers of the arsenal as well as
the members of the native army after their provoleges were drawn
back by Gen. Izquierdo"

SECOND,
"Gen. Izquierdo introduced rigid and strict policies that made the
Filipinos move and turn away from Spanish government out of
disgust;"
THIRD,
"the Central Governent failed to conduct an investigation on what
truly transpired but relied on reports of Izquierdo and the frairs and
the opinion of the public;"

FOURTH,
"the happy days of the friars were already numbered in 1872 when the
Central Government in Spain decided to deprive them of the power to
intervene in government affairs as well as in the direction and
management of schools prompting them to commit frantic moves to
extend their stay and power;"
FIFTH,
"the Filipino clergy members actively participated in the secularization
movement in order to allow Filipino priests to take hold of the parishes
in the country making them prey to the rage of the friars;"

SIXTH,
"Filipinos during the timee were active participants, and responded to
what they deemed as injustices;" and

LASTLY,
"the execution of GOMBURZA was a mistake on the part of the
Spanish government, for the action severed the ill-feelings of the
Filipinos and the event inspired Filipino patriots to call for reforms and
eventually independence."
