CE322-18 PRINCIPLES OF STEEL DESIGN – QUIZ NO.

3
STUDENT NAME: ___________________________________ DATE: ______________
STUDENT NUMBER: _______________________________ SCORE: _____________

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use five (5) decimal places for your calculations but record your final answer/s in two (2) decimal places.
Each of your problem set solutions should be written on a new sheet of paper. The following rules will
apply in the grading of problem sets. Points will be deducted for each of the following items:

• No sketches where sketches are necessary or desirable as instructed.

• No units where units are applicable.
• Not rounding-off your final answers to an appropriate decimal place.
• Not boxing your final answers.
• Not numbering each page and each problem.

Note: No need to rewrite the problem. Just present your solutions. Use AISC section database if applicable.
Assume given loads as service load (unfactored) unless otherwise specified.

Problem No. 1 (30 points)

A built-up section was made using PL414x12mm thk plates as shown in the figure below. It is pinned at
both ends with additional support against weak axis at middle point. Assume A50 steel.

a) Calculate moment of inertia at both axes in mm4.

b) Determine the design compressive strength in kN if L=3m.
c) Find the design compressive strength in kN if L=18m.

Problem No. 2 (40 points)
Design all members in the truss shown below using only W14 steel sections considering the factored loads
Pu = 850kN. Assume k = 0.9 and use LRFD and A36. Ignore weights of truss members. The truss was
supported by a pin support at the left and a rocker support at the right. Maintain a DCR value of 0.80 to
0.90 and use the most economical section. Apply design of tension and compression members. Ignore
rupture and block shear failure for tension members. Use compact section only.

a) What is the degree of determinacy of the given truss?

b) Enumerate all zero force member/s.
c) Calculate the internal forces of all members in kN.
d) Tabulate your propose W14 section for each member showing the internal load, available strength
and its corresponding DCR value.
Tip: Prepare an excel spreadsheet to automate your design calculations and to save time in iterations.

Problem No. 3 (30 points)
A 3.5m long column (W18x55) at the ground floor is pinned at the bottom and fixed against rotation but
free to translate at the top. Use ASD and A36 steel.

Assume floor loads as follows:

1.0kPa service dead load on all floors and
1.9kPa service live load on all floors including the roof.

Ignore live load reduction.

d) Calculate the total service load supported by the interior column C in kN located at grid 2-B in the
ground floor level.
e) Based on (d), what is the adequacy against compression?
