1.0 OBJECTIVE
1.1 To understand that electric field is the physical field that surrounds each electric
charge and exerts force on all other charges in the field, either attracting or repelling
them.
1.2 To understand that electrostatic fields arise from a potential difference or voltage
gradient, and can exist when charge carriers, such as electrons are stationary.
2.0 APPARATUS
3.0 PROCEDURE
In this lab, students are required to explore electrostatic as they place and arrange the positive
and negative charges in space and experimenting how charged bodies interact, predict how
charged bodies will interact and describe the strength and direction of the electric field around
a charged body.
3.1 Click play button for interactive simulation lab on this topic.
3.2 Drag charges into the play area.
3.3 View the resulting electric field.
3.4 Use sensor to allow probe the electric field and study the magnitude of the field
represented by the length of the vector.
3.5 To double the charge, student can stack charges on one another.
3.6 Use grid to arrange charges and sensor to design experiment and explore the
characteristic of electric field for various charges arrangement.
Figure 3
3.7 Use Equipotential sensor to draw equipotential lines at desired points to read the
value of the electric potential.
3.8 Use the simulation to get results as instructed and include images for support (if
deemed suitable)
Design experiments to study the resulting E-field and also to determine the relationship
between distance, magnitude of charge, the strength and direction of the electrical field for:
Negative
2. point dipole
The distance for point dipole is 23.1 cm and the total electrical at surrounding field
strength is not so strong
5. plate capacitor
The distance for potential direction for positive and negative charge have some gap
which is 232.9 cm.
5.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion , the students should be able to comprehend the theory of charges and fields.
Thus, when the students used the simulation website and ran the simulation, they learned and
understood that an electric field is a physical field that surrounds each electric charge and exerts
force on all other charges in the field, either attracting or repelling them. Furthermore, students
should be able to understand that electrostatic fields form as a result of a potential difference or a
voltage gradient, and that they can exist when charge carriers, such as electrons, are stationary.
Last but not least, the students must be able to identify what happens to the electrical field when
extra positive(+) or negative(-) charges have been added on it.
