Enslaved black people


Who
Between 1629 and 1934 there were more than four thousand enslaved
people of african descent in the british and french colonies that became
Quebec, ontario, Nova scotia, Prince edward island and New brunswick.
What
After arriving in nova scotia, the promises of freedom, equality, jobs, and
good cheap land where unfulfilled they were given smaller plots of land
then the white people started working as soldiers, labourers, cooks, and
musicians but where payed less than the white people at the same job.
Where
Many settled along the st Lawrence river to the bay of Quinte and in
settlements in the Niagara peninsula and along the detroit river. Also,
some enslaved black people settled along with there loyalists masters in
the area soon to be known as the eastern townships in lower canada.
Why
The slaves ran away and moved to british north america to escape the
cruel treatment, unsatisfactory economic opportunities, and harsh
segregationist laws. Many black americans headed north where they took
advantage of the need for industrial workers that arose during the world
war along with the promised cheap and good quality land.
How
Approximately 3000 black loyalists departed new york in 81 ships heading
to nova scotia between april and november of 1783 some arrived as hired
workers, indentured workers, apprenticed workers, or as free persons
some traveled on there own accord.
