Hot hydraulic oil under high pressure can remain in the components of
the hydraulic system or the power train system after the engine has been
stopped. The uncontrolled release of the hydraulic oil can cause sudden
machine movement and can also result in the following conditions:

• Burns

• The penetration of body tissue

• Other personal injury

• Death

If hydraulic oil penetrates body tissue, the injury must be treated

immediately by a doctor who is familiar with this type of injury. Use a
board or a piece of cardboard to check for a hydraulic oil leak. Make
sure that all of the attachments have been lowered to the ground and
that all trapped pressure has been released from the hydraulic system
and the power train system. Also, make sure that the hydraulic oil is
cool before the removal of any components or lines. Remove the
hydraulic oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap
is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Personal injury or death can result from not engaging the parking
brake.

Transmission engagement alone will not prevent machine from rolling

when the engine is stopped.

Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing.

If the machine begins to move during test, reduce the engine speed
immediately and engage the parking brake.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Calibration of the Service Brake Pedal

This procedure can be used in order to calibrate the service brake pedal.

Required Equipment

The following equipment is required in order to ensure that the calibration of the service brake pedal can be
completed with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) service tool:

• Laptop computer with serial port

• Communications adapter

• ET 2009A or a later version

• A flash file (.fls) must be loaded into the A4 electronic control module (ECM) on the machine.

If the Information System Builder is required, then the following additional files will also be required:

• An ELF file (.elf) must be used to communicate with a given flash file.

• The Information System Builder also requires a "setup" File that needs to be created or loaded into the
Information System Builder so that instructions can be uploaded into the ECM.

Calibration Procedure

The steps of the calibration procedure follow:

1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location.

Note: Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in the
operator's sight.

2. Set the parking brake.

3. Verify that the speed of the engine is 0 rpm.

4. Verify that the shift lever is in the NEUTRAL position.

5. Connect the cable (communications) to the laptop computer and the Cat ET service connector on the machine.

the calibration is not successful, repeat the entire calibration.

Calibration of the Brake Touch Up Pressure

This calibration provides smooth brake engagement. Many conditions can affect this calibration. Some conditions
that can affect the calibration are power train oil temperature and track tension. If the calibration procedures for
submode 2 are performed and there is harsh engagement of the brakes, adjust the low pressure setting for the brakes.

1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location.

2. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in the operator's
sight.

3. Place the steering control lever in the NEUTRAL position.

4. Engage the parking brake.

5. Lower the attachments to the ground.

6. Stop the engine.

7. Turn the key to the OFF position.

Reference: Refer to Troubleshooting for additional guidance for preparing the machine for testing.

Note: The monitoring system (if equipped) for your machine accesses many values that are useful in
troubleshooting the power train system. When the situation is appropriate, use the monitoring system in order
to find a pressure or determine a system problem.

8. Warm up the power train oil to a minimum of 60 °C (140 °F). Lift the tractor off the ground. Jack stands can be
used or the blade and the ripper can be used.

Note: The procedure can be performed with the track on the ground. If these procedures are performed with the
machine on the ground, the ground surface should be hard and level.

9. Release the parking brake. Set the engine speed at low idle.

10. With the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool, enter mode 6. Then, enter submode 02.

11. Shift the transmission to third gear FORWARD and allow the tracks to rotate for several revolutions.

12. Begin the test by pressing the "CLEAR" switch to the DECREMENT ("-") position and then release the switch.
The test current will be applied to the brake solenoid for 20 seconds.

13. Observe the tracks in order to determine if the tracks stop. Wait for 20 seconds for the tracks to stop. Do not
press the "CLEAR" switch more than one time during the same test. After 20 seconds, the test current is
automatically removed and the track speed will return to normal speed. The tracks can also be returned to
normal speed by pressing the "CLEAR" switch to the INCREMENT ("+") position and then releasing the
switch.

◦ If the tracks stop at any time before returning to normal speed, increase the present value to 5 units
higher. The value is shown on the display. Press and release the "CLEAR" switch to the INCREMENT
("+") position until the value is changed. Return to Step 12 and repeat the test.

◦ If the tracks do not stop before returning to normal speed, proceed to the next step.

14. Decrease the present value that is shown on the display to 1 unit lower. Press and release the "CLEAR" switch
to the DECREMENT ("-") position until the value is changed. The 20 second test will begin again. Observe the
tracks in order to determine if the tracks stop. Wait for 20 seconds for the tracks to stop.

◦ If the tracks stop at any time before returning to normal speed, calibration of the brakes is complete. Exit
submode 02 by scrolling to the next submode. The "SCROLL" switch and the "MODE" switch may also
be used to exit the calibration.

◦ If the tracks do not stop before returning to normal speed, proceed to Step 12.

Low Pressure Adjustment for the Brakes

This submode sets the lowest range of pressure for the brakes.

Procedure

1. Warm up the power train oil to a minimum of 60 °C (140 °F).

2. Connect a pressure gauge that has a range that is no greater than 483 kPa (70 psi). Connect the gauge in line
with a valve to the pressure fitting for the brakes. The valve should be closed. The 8T-0853 Pressure Gauge or
the 6V-7830 Pressure Gauge may be used.

NOTICE

Use of the 6V-7830 Pressure Gauge is highly recommended. It does not

need a valve in line for protection. However, if a standard low pressure
gauge such as 8T-0853 Pressure Gauge is used, a valve must be used in
line with the gauge to protect the gauge from high pressure while
changing submodes. If a valve is not used for the standard gauge, the
gauge may become permanently damaged while changing submodes.

3. Set the engine speed to high idle with the transmission in NEUTRAL. Engage the parking brake.

4. With the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool, enter mode 6. Then, enter submode 06.

5. Open the valve. Use the INCREMENT position ("+") and the DECREMENT position ("-") of the "CLEAR"
switch to adjust the brake pressure to 50 ± 35 kPa (7 ± 5 psi).

Note: The specified value for the "brake low pressure" may not be attainable. This may be due to the following
conditions: "no low pressure gauge", "gauge hysteresis", and "cold power train oil" Bring the pressures as close
as possible to the specified value. The adjustments for low brake pressure do not need to be exactly on the
mark.

6. Close the valve or disconnect the gauge before submode 06 is exited. Exit submode 06 by scrolling to the
next submode with the "SCROLL" switch. The "MODE" switch can also be used to exit the calibration.
