STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Articulate the functions, basic principles and the different facets of HR. Students will
have an idea of which area of HR would be a professional fit for them by learning about
each area of HR and writing a reflective essay discussing the area that interests them
most and why.

and how it is formatted. Students will know what resources can be utilized to assist in

questions to ask based on the position they are interviewing for. In groups of 2 students

help you succeed. Attending every class is highly recommended, but not required. Please do
not come to class if you are sick. If you need a mental health day, I will accommodate that. I
want students to feel like their best selves when attending class!I just ask that you come to
class ready and willing to learn. There is no grade for participation, but I do encourage it. I
would like to hear everyone’s thoughts about the readings and materials, and do not expect
you to be an expert in order to participate.

OVERALL COURSE REQUIREMENTS & GRADING SCALE:

● Weekly discussions are worth 10% of the final course grade. Every week students
will be tasked with reading an HR news article, blog or TED Talk of their choice.

different areas of HR and write a reflective essay on the area of HR that interests them
most and why.
● Job description assignment is worth a total of 25% of the final course grade. This
assignment will be broken into two sections.
○ Students will be required to select a company and position to create a job
description for. Throughout the first half of the course students will learn about
the steps, tools and services that can be used to assist in creating a job
description. Students will then submit a written paper stating why they chose their
specific company and position. This is worth 10% of the final course grade.

that company and position. In groups of two mock interviews will be conducted during
class (one student as the interviewer and the other as the interviewee. Then they will
switch.) The “interviewee” will complete a small 5 question review rating the “interviewer”
on their questions and process; these results will count towards student grade.
● Final Exam is worth 30% of the final grade. Students will complete a 3 question short
response exam. Questions will be open ended. This will be a take home, open book,
open note exam. There will be no class held on the last scheduled day of class as this
will be a day students can dedicate to completing their exams.

opportunities to receive extra credit during the course. The first opportunity will involve
attending an HR webinar, event or watching a TED Talk about HR and writing a 1-2 page

this class better for students in the future.
