Treatment Plan Options
Edentulous Maxilla
- No treatment
Disadvantage: Difficulty in cating/spcaking, continued bone
loss, maintain current prosthesis (ilftting)
2. Complete upper denture
Advantage: Minimal treatment, fast
Disadvantage: Removable prosthesis disadvantages, difficuley
in eating/speaking, palate coverage, continued bone loss
3. Implant-supported overdenture (Removable, RPS)
Advantage: Removable prosthesis that “clips” in, added reeen-
tion, soft tissue support
isudvantage: Full denture with palate, needs to be removed some-
time each day removable, lps need changed on a regular basis
{additional cos), may have asociated mobility of prosthesis
4, Implant-supported overdenture (removable, RP4)
Advantage: Remenable prosthesis that clipsin, horseshoe shaped (no
ful palate), no soft tissue coverage, toaly implant supported
Disadvantage: needs to be removed sometime cach day removable
prosthesis clips need changed on a regular asis (addtional est),
5. Implanc-supported fixed prosthesis (fixed)
Advantage: Fixed prosthesis (Non-Removable) increased biting
force, Closest prosthesis co natural teeth
Disadvantage: Usually wil require extensive bone grafting and more
implants, posible need for pink porcelain or acrylic because of
‘the amount of bone los, teth will be larger (FP-2/FP-3), may
not be able wo increase sof tissue support, increased expense
Edentulous Mandible
1. No treatment
Disadvantage: Dificaley in catinglspeaking, continued bone
loss, maintain curtent prosthess (ill-fitting)
2. Complete lower denture
Advantage: Minimal treatment, fat
Disadvantage: Removable prosthesis, ficult in cating/speak-
ing, continued bone loss
3. Implant-supporeed overdenture (Removable, RPS)
Advantage: Removable prosthesis that clips in, less implants re-
‘uited, soft tissue support
Disadvantage: Full dencure, needs to be removed sometime
‘ach day removable, clips need changed on a rgular basis
{Additional cost), May have associated mobility
4, Implant-supported overdenture (removable, RP4)
Advantage: Removable prosthesis that clips in, no sof dsue
coverage
Disadvantage: needs co be removed sometime exch day, remov-
able, clips need changed on a regular bass (additional cost)
5. Implant-supported fixed prosthesis (Gxed), Requires more
implants than RP-S
Advantage: Fixed prosthesis (Non-Removable) increased biting
force, Closest prosthesis to natural eeth
ra16
Disadvantage: Usually will require more implants, increased ex-
pense, possible need for pink porcelain or acrylic because of
the amount of bone loss, teeth will be larger (FP-2/FP-3),
‘may not be able to increase soft tissue support
Single Tooth Missing
1, No treatment
Disadvantage: Esthetics, adjacent teth may move (tiling) su-
praeruption, decreased mastication, food impaction, con-
tinued bone loss, occlusal force
2, Removable Partial denture
Advantage: Minimal ecatment, fast
Disadvantage: Removable prosthesis, difficulty in eating/speak-
ing, extensive pressure on adjacent teec/soft tissue which
leads to additional tooth los, poor longe-teem success rat,
increased bone loss, issue soreness
3. Fixed partial denture
Advantage: Fas, esthetic, usualy no need for hard/sof tissue
grafting
Disadvantage: Alteration of adjacent tech, higher incidence of
decay, increased endodontic treatment (15%), hygiene dif-
ficulty
4, Implant-supported crown
Advantage: No alteration of adjacent teeth, higher success
rate than fixed partial denture (most studies >90% suc-
cess rate)
Disadvantage: Longer treatment time, requires bone quality
and quantity esthetic issues possible
Multiple Missing Teeth
1, No treatment
Disadvantage: Esthetics, adjacent teth will move (iting), su-
pracruption, decreased mastication, continued bone loss,
food impaction, occlusal for
2. Removable Partial denture
Advantage: Minizmal tcatmnent, fast
Disadvantage: Removable prosthesis, difficulty in eating/speak-
ing, tissue soreness, places extensive pressure on adjacent
tceth/soft tissue which leads to additional cooth loss, poor
Tong-texm success rate
3, Fixed partial denture (indicated)
Advantage: Fast, esthetic
Disadvantage: Alveration of adjacent teeth, higher incidence
of decay, increased endodontic treatment (- 15%), hygiene
dificuley
4, Implant-supported prosthesis
Advantage: No alteration of adjacent teeth, higher success rate
than fixed partial denture (most studies >90% succes rate)
Disadvantage: Longer teatment time, requites bone quality
and quantity, esthetic issues possible
