INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

English is the international language. English is one of the most important subjects in
high school. English is a tool for communicating orally and in writing. Communicating is the
process of gathering information, thoughts, words and developing science, technology and
culture. Therefore English subjects are directed to develop listening, speaking, reading and
writing skills so as to be able to communicate and speak in English.

By mastering English well, we will be able to communicate with other nations in this
world. Besides that, we will also be able to add to our insights and knowledge for the
betterment of our nation and country, because we will be able to read English literature, listen
to foreign radio broadcasts, and watch other scientific films.

In addition to increasing our understanding of international languages, learning English

will at least make it easier for us to get a decent job, or to provide our knowledge in the
future. By understanding and mastering international languages properly and correctly, of
course, it will provide very good benefits for all of us.

For this reason, it is necessary to understand the grammar in English first. In addition to
facilitating the way of pronunciation, we will also understand how to arrange the words to be
spoken so that they become one coherent and correct sentence according to the tenses. There
are many types of texts to learn in English especially in the level of senior high school. In this
paper we will discuss three of them, namely: Narrative Text, Recount Text, and Procedure
Text.

DISCUSSIONS

2.1 Narrative Text

 Definition

A Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people. Narrative text is a type of text
that tells a story or describes a sequence of events.

 Generic Structure
- Orientation
Orientation sets the stage for the story. Ideally, the orientation should answer the questions
“who,” “where, and “when.” So, when reading the orientation part, we should be able to
identify the character and setting (both time and place) of the story.

- Complication
This section contains the problems that occur within a story. It is divided into three parts,
namely: Rising action: Problems begin to emerge Climax: Peak of the problem. Falling
action: The tension of the problem begins to decrease, and the solution starts to emerge

- Resolution
The resolution is the part of the narrative where the conflict or problem introduced earlier in
the story is resolved or addressed. This may involve characters finding a solution to their
issues, overcoming obstacles, or experiencing personal growth. The resolution helps tie up
loose ends, providing closure for the reader and allowing them to see how the events of the
story have impacted the characters.

- Re-orientation / Evaluation
Re-orientation, also known as evaluation, is an optional component of a narrative text that
serves to reflect on the story and its events, reinforcing the moral lesson or theme. This
section typically appears at the end of the story, providing a summary or commentary on the
characters’ experiences and the consequences of their actions.

 Social Function

The purpose of a narrative text is to tell a story or recount a series of events in an engaging
and entertaining way for the reader. Some narrative texts may also have didactic or
instructive purposes, such as teaching moral lessons or sharing information about historical
events or specific cultural traditions. Narrative texts also have social functions, which include
entertaining, providing information, and of course, educating the readers.

 Grammatical Features
- Using past action verb: Climbed, Turned, Brought, etc.
- Using specific noun as pronoun of person, animal in the story. Example: The king.
- Using adjectives which are for noun phrase. Example: Long black.
- Using time connectives and Conjunctions to arrange the events. Examples: Then,
before, after, soon, etc.
- Using adverbs and adverbial phrase to show the location of events. Examples: Here,
in the mountain, ever after, etc.
- Using dialogue to elicit an emotional response from the reader.

 Example of Narrative Text

The Ant and the Dove

One hot day, an ant was seeking some water. After walking around for a moment, she
came to a spring. To reach the spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass. While making her
way up, she slipped and fell unintentionally into the water.

She could have sunk if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen her. Seeing that the ant
was in trouble, the dove quickly put off a leaf from a tree and dropped it immediately into the
water near the struggling ant. Then the ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up there.
Soon it carried her safely to dry ground.

Not long after that, there was a hunter nearby who was throwing out his net towards
the dove, hoping to trap it in this way.
Guessing what he should do, the ant quickly bit him on the heel. Feeling the pain, the
hunter dropped his net and the dove flew away quickly from this net.

Moral of the story: One good turn deserves another.

There were many birds flew in the sky. Also, there were many sellers who sold many kinds
