First Section

1. Concept of Charge

Gains electrons- Negatively charged

Loses electrons- Positively charged

Two like charges- Repel Each other

Two unlike charges- Attract each other.

Charge symbol- q (Q)

Coulomb.

Milli Coulomb (mC): 1mC=10 raised to -3,

Micro coulomb (muC) 1 muc = 10 raised to -6

Nano –Coulomb (nC) 1 nC= 10 raised to -9

The quantity of charge is determined by number of electrons in deficit (if positively charged) or number
of electrons in excess (if the body is negatively charged).

Charge on a body will always be an integer multiple of charge on an electron q= + or – ne

n--- is the number of electrons in deficit for + sign and in excess for – sign.

e- the charge of an electron. = -1.6 X 10 raised to -19 C

So, 1 C charge means a deficit of 6.25 X 10 raised to 18 electrons= 1/1.6 X 10 raised to -19) electrons
