1 TYPHOON ODETTE
TYPE: TROPICAL CYCLONE/TYPHOON
WHAT HAPPENED?
Typhoon Rai, most familiar to the Philippines
as Typhoon Odette, was one of the most
lethal hydrometeorological disaster that had
occcured in the country. Tropical cyclone
Odette ravaged the Visayas and Mindanao
islands with harsh winds, torrential rains, and
flooding during December of 2021.
SUPER
1 TYPHOON ODETTE
ELEMENTS AT RISK:
-HUMAN LIVES. People's lives are considered as elements at risk since it had
affected 11 different regions in the Mindanao and Visayas islands. Not only will
people be physically affected by the flood, heavy rainfalls, and landslides, but
the stress from finding ways to recover and cope with the typhoon may add
to the emotional toll that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused.
REACTION
It was devastating to read about the many lives and livelihoods
destroyed by such a deadly disaster. Natural disasters like this can cause
catastrophic destruction, leaving families and communities struggling to
rebuild their lives. In addition to the physical damage, the emotional
trauma of such a tragedy can have a lasting impact. With that much
damage caused, it is challenging to imagine how difficult it must have
been to recover fully from such event. But despite the immense difficulty
of such a task, many survivors have persevered and found a way to
rebuild and move forward; I find that worthy of admiration.
2 TYPHOON GLENDA
TYPE: TROPICAL CYCLONE/TYPHOON
WHAT HAPPENED?
Eight months after Super Typhoon
Haiyan/Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines,
another severe storm tore through the nation,
Typhoon Glenda. On July 15, 2014, Glenda (also
known as Rammasun internationally) made
landfall over southern Luzon as a category 3
storm, dumping copious amounts of rain and
maintaining speeds of 200 km/h (125 mph).
2 TYPHOON GLENDA
ELEMENTS AT RISK:
-HUMAN LIVES. It had affected most of Southern Luzon, putting the lives of a
lot of people at risk. In addition to the physical damage caused by heavy
rains, and landslides, the stress from recovering and coping with the
typhoon could add to the emotional damage caused by Typhoon Yolanda.
REACTION
A deadly disaster that destroyed so many lives and livelihoods was
disheartening to read about. The sheer magnitude of the destruction,
combined with the fact that so many lives were lost and impacted, made
it a tragedy of epic proportions. It is difficult to even imagine the amount
of sorrow and grief that the survivors and their families must have
experienced. It is a reminder of the fragility of life, and of the importance
of cherishing every moment that we have with our loved ones. This
tragedy also serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can be taken
away from us and how small control we have over nature's forces.
3 TYPHOON PEPENG
TYPE: TROPICAL CYCLONE/TYPHOON
WHAT HAPPENED?
After Tropical storm Ondoy hit the Philippines in
September 2009, Typhoon Pepeng swiftly followed. It
was during the period of October 3–9, 2009 that
Typhoon Pepeng, classified as a Category III storm, hit
the Philippines. Three passes were made across the
central and northern parts of Luzon on its erratic route.
It first produced strong winds with gusts as high as 230
km/hr, followed by a protracted period of torrential
rains with cumulative quantities surpassing 1,000 mm
in some regions.
3 TYPHOON PEPENG
ELEMENTS AT RISK:
HUMAN LIVES. Due to the fact that it has affected different parts of
Central and Northern Luzon, the lives of people are considered as
elements at risk. In addition to the physical damage from the flood,
heavy rainfall, and landslides, the stress from recovering and coping
may add to the emotional damage caused by Tropical Storm
Ondoy.
REACTION
It was devastating to read about the many lives and livelihoods
destroyed by such a deadly disaster. The sheer level of destruction
caused by the disaster, from the loss of life to the destruction of
homes and businesses, is heartbreaking. It's difficult to imagine the
trauma and suffering experienced by those affected, not just in the
present but for many years to come. The long-term ripple effect of this
tragedy is something that cannot be ignored, making it all the more
important to provide necessary assistance and support to those
impacted. All the more reason to act quickly and compassionately, to
ensure that the affected individuals, families, and communities receive
the help and resources they desperately need.
