Catalogo Alphabetico de Apellidos- literally translates to “Alphabetical Catalog of Surnames”.


It is a book of surnames created in accordance with a directive issued on November 21, 1849
by Governor General Narciso Claveria.

Mestizo- a man who is mixed-race, particularly one who is of Spanish and native descent.

Ethnicity- a big collection of individuals who share a common culture, language, history, and
set of traditions

Mulatto- a person who has black and white ancestry. It can be a person with one black and
one white parent.

Criollo- It is a person who is a pure Spanish.

Insular- a person who is Spanish but was born in the Philippines. It can also mean when a
person is close-minded or if a person is not open to new cultures and ideas.

Peninsular- a person who was born in the Spanish Peninsula. It can also mean a land
surrounded by bodies of water.
