ASIAN ELEPHANT

The Asian elephant, also known as the Asiatic elephant, is the only living species of the genus
Elephas and is distributed throughout the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, from India in the
west, Nepal in the north, Sumatra in the south, and to Borneo in the east.

Asian elephant numbers have dropped by at least 50% over the last three generations, and they're
still in decline today. With only 40,000-50,000 left in the wild, the species is classified as
endangered.

The Asian elephant is classified as Endangered by the International Union for the
Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its population has declined by an estimated 50 percent over the
past 75 years, and there are an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 Asian elephants left in the wild.
