    The need for cellular energy.

    Mechanical work: eg, muscle contraction

    Cellular transport work; eg, maintain Na* gradient across the plasma memebrane.

    Biochemical work: biosynthesis of larg molecules=anabolic pathways (protein, DNA, RNA synthesis etc..)

    Detoxification.
