Framo
Framo is a trademark name of submerged cargo pumps
available around the world tanker market. The company- Frank
Mohn AS, was founded in 1938 and is located outside Bergen in
Western Norway.

This cargo pumping system adheres to the requirements and

meets all new international rules and regulations for safe and
profitable cargo handling, efficient stripping and tank cleaning.

Framo is popularly used on board chemical carriers, product

tankers, crude carriers, barges, OBO carriers and FPSO/FSO.

Hydraulic System Checks
Hydraulics is an important part of the framo operations. It is
important for the operator to understand the hydraulic system
attached to the pump and means to test the same.

Hydraulic connections, flexible hoses and particularly cargo

hoses must be regularly checked to avoid leakage.

Hydraulic oil based on mineral oil has a flash point between 180
and 230°C. Hot surfaces must be shielded.

Connect a flexible tube, filled with hydraulic oil, in the
alarm block. Changeover the valve lever and lift the
tube accordingly to get high and low level alarm.

Wear Indication Alarm
Contact in the debris switch gives alarm "Wear indication".
This indicates that the drain line connected to the tank is
contaminated by magnetic particles due to following reasons:

• Contamination from piping, components or from oil filling

• Filter by-passing because of contaminated filter or open by-

pass valves

• Wear on pump's bearings and/or rotary group

Debris detectors (if installed) should be checked every 3 months.

Isolate the hydraulic line and dismantle the particle
detector element. Short the detector by conductive
metal (screw driver) to check the alarm.

Framo Engine Checks
In Framo Pump, the hydraulic power unit consists of hydraulic
power packs, which are driven by an electric motor and/or
diesel engine. The hydraulic pumps are generally of axial piston
type and swash plate design with variable displacement.

A diesel engine operates multiple Framo pumps and the oil

delivery from the hydraulic pumps will always be the same as
the oil consumption for the hydraulic motors.

To control and limit the speed of the motor, a control valve is

fitted for each motor.

Emergency Shutdown
Once a shutdown function is initiated, the PLC will give shut
down command to the power packs in sequence. The first power
pack stops immediately and delay between shut down
command of each following power pack is 0.75 seconds.

It is very important that emergency stop buttons are used only

for an emergency situation and not for the normal operational
stop of the system.

The following conditions may be considered for emergency

shut-down of the system:
- Low oil level in tank
- Closed valve in return line
- Low feed pressure (depending on the installation)

the system and alarm

High Pressure Piping
The Framo system comprises of low pressure and high pressure
piping arrangements. For High Pressure Piping (HPP), a jacketed
steel pipe is normally used. In case of failure of the pipe, the
outer jacket will contain the leak, without letting it out to the
surrounding and protecting the operator.

The leaking oil goes to a leak off tank whose level is

continuously monitored. Once the alarm gets activated,
immediate action must be taken to detect the leak source and
to stop the leakage.

To check the alarm, short both the terminal of the sensor in
the leak of chamber.

DISCLAIMER

• The procedure may vary as per the machinery and model.

We always recommend checking the engine makers manual
before performing any task on the engine.

• The photo illustration shows a brief method of the

concerned test/ check procedure and does not describe the
complete step by step procedure

• The photo illustration does not include all the test/ checks
perform on the particular machinery

• It is important to take safety precaution and may require

isolation of machinery/ component before performing any
task on the engine room machinery
