CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
One’s perception on what is abuse and what can be considered as discipline in child fostering have a direct impact on how they treat
their own child and nurture it using different parenting styles. However, there are different variables that can act as an influence in a
parent’s parenting style. In a study conducted by Diana Baumrind in the 1960s, she noticed that preschoolers exhibited distinctly
different types of behaviors and theorized about 4 styles of parenting (Li 2023). In Baumrind’s study there are 4 types of parenting
styles, such as Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, and Neglectful. In this study, we will be analysing the variables that affect
parents to decide what parenting style is more suitable for their family and what is needed for their child to prosper.
An angle proposed by our study, is the influence of religion and belief of the parents. Preachers from different churches will have a
significant effect on a person’s belief (Rice 2019). In some cases, a cult belief such as in the Independent Fundamental Churches (IFC)
believed in the umbrella of authority which is a strict teaching that gives authority to men while making women and children submit to
them (Kaminski 2022). Members of this cult tend to abuse and exploit women and children as it is deemed to be the most suitable
parenting style for them, children have no choice but to submit to their mothers and fathers without the chance to voice themselves
The main variable is the awareness in the premise of abuse, the abuse is ironically intentionally unintentional. An instance is the
child’s emotional neglect, plenty of parents shrug off complaints made by children assuming it's just a random whining. However, this
type of neglective behavior will cause the children to learn that their emotional needs aren’t important and will stop seeking comfort
from their parents as a result. (Legg & Holland 2021) The example given shows that the parent’s ignorance to the importance of
supporting their offspring emotionally and tending to their “whines” concluded in a neglective parenting style. However, parents can
still tend to their kid but still be neglectful by just missing some needed key points. (Legg & Holland 2021)
