Problem Set – Lesson 1

BOX YOUR FINAL ANSWER, ROUND UP FINAL ANSWER TO 2 DECIMAL PLACES.

1. The bar in the figure below has a constant width of 35 mm and a a thickness of 15 mm.
Determine the maximum average normal stress in the bar when it is subjected to the
loading show. Ans: 57.14 MPa

2. Determine the average normal stress in each of the 20 mm diameter bars of the truss.
When P = 40 kN. Ans: 159 MPa 95.5 MPa 127 MPa

3. The tank of the air compressor is subjected to an internal pressure of 120 psi. If the internal
diameter of the tank is 22 in., and the wall thickness is 0.25 in., determine the tangential
and longitudinal stress. Ans: 5.28 ksi 2.64 ksi

Problem Set – Lesson 1

4. The supporting wheel on a scaffold is held in place on the leg using a pin as shown. If the
wheel is subjected to a normal force of 3 kN, determine the diameter of the pin. If the
allowable stress for the pin is 200 MPa. Use factor of safety of 2. Neglect friction between
the inner scaffold puller leg and the tube used on the wheel. Double shear. 4.37 mm

5. If the wood joint in the figure below has a width of 150 mm, determine the average shear
stress developed along shear planes a-a and b-b. 200 kPa 160 kPa
