First World War

The First World War, which took place between 1914 and 1918, was one of the bloodiest
conflicts in human history. It was fought between the Allied Powers (United Kingdom,
France, Russia, among others) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and
Italy).

The immediate cause of the war was the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz
Ferdinand in Sarajevo in June 1914. This event triggered a series of alliances and
declarations of war, leading to widespread conflict across Europe.

The war was marked by trenches, bloody battles and modern weapons such as tanks,
planes and toxic gases. Millions of people died on both sides, and the war had a profound
impact on society and politics around the world.

Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which imposed heavy
economic and political penalties on the country. This, in turn, led to the rise of the Nazi
party and the start of World War II.

World War I changed the world in many ways, accelerating the change in political and
economic systems, and creating the conditions for the rise of new world powers. Its
effects are still felt today, almost a century after its end.
