SELENA GOMEZ CHRONICLE
Selena Marie Gómez was born in Grand Prairie Texas on July 22, 1992. She’s an
American singer, actress, songwriter, producer, designer, dancer, director,
presenter and businesswoman. She was the first child of Mexican Ricardo Joel
Gomez and former U.S. Stage actress Mandy Teefey, who gave birth to Gómez
when she was 16. Gomez was named after Texas singer Selena, whose parents
were fans.
According to Gomez, she developed her interest in acting at an early age, when
she watched her mother prepare for her plays. At the age of 10, she auditioned for
her first show Barney & Friends. She began taping the show in 2002, with the
recurring role of Gianna. in 2007, she played the lead role of Alex Russo in the
Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place. It premiered on October 12,
2007, and its pilot episode had approximately 5.9 million viewers. The series was
one of the channel's most successful and won three Emmy Awards for best
children's show; it could be said that this role was the one that catapulted her as an
actress.
In 2006, Gomez performed the theme song for Brain Zapped, a short film in which
she starred. In 2008 she signed a contract with Hollywood Records, and since then
she has recorded multiple soundtracks for the Disney Channel. After signing her
record deal with Hollywood Records, Gomez commented that she wanted to form a
band with boys, and that she was looking for "someone who is very passionate
about music and can show me that they can rock". Finally, in August 2009, Gomez
posted on her official Twitter account that the band would be called Selena Gomez
& the Scene, and that the name of their first album would be Kiss & Tell.
While working on her second studio album, Gomez released her first track under
the Interscope Records label, "I Want You to Know," a collaboration with disc
jockey Zedd as the lead single from her second album True Colors (2015) on
February 23, 2015. The single became Gomez's fourth top twenty entry on the
Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. Gomez embarked on her
Revival Tour (2016) world tour on May 6. Gomez stated that the tour would focus
solely on her as an artist and would feature less choreography and fewer effects
than her previous tour.
Gomez was diagnosed with lupus sometime between 2012 and early 2014. In
September 2017, she revealed on Instagram that she had left public events for the
previous few months because she had received a kidney transplant from actress
and friend Francia Raisa. During the transplant, she ruptured an artery and
underwent emergency surgery to build a new artery using a vein from her leg.
Gomez has been open about her struggles with anxiety and depression. She
began seeking therapy when she was in her early twenties and also spent time in
treatment centers.
In addition to her musical and acting career, Gomez is a philanthropist who has
contributed to various humanitarian and charitable works. In 2008, Gomez
participated in the UR Votes Count campaign, where she encouraged more than
50,000 teenagers to learn about that year's U.S. presidential election candidates,
Barack Obama and John McCain. That same year she was a spokesperson for
Unicef's Trick-Or-Treats campaign to raise funds during Halloween to donate to
children in need. In July 2009, she became an activist for RAISE Hope For Congo,
a campaign founded with the intention of stopping violence, both physical and
sexual, against women in Congo. That same year, Unicef appointed her as an
ambassador at the age of 17, making her the youngest ambassador in history.
In 2020, Gomez received the Hispanic Heritage Foundation's Arts Award for her
impact on world culture through her music, filmography and advocacy. She was
named Billboard's Woman of the Year in 2017 in recognition of her influence and
commercial success. Gomez was listed among Time's 100 Most Influential People
of 2020.
